Session Summaries by Algebra Tutors

Newport News, VA Algebra tutoring
This was my first session with the student for the new year and also our first since he took his final at the end of the last grading period. This morning, his mother met with his teacher to discuss the results and before my meeting with the student, we talked about what she had learned. It seemed that he had run out of time during the test and did not have time to go through four or five questions. He also had a few concepts that had slipped his mind during the exam. With this in mind, I will definitely think of new strategies to guide our sessions so that I can help him raise his grade to better reflect his understanding of the material. His only assigned homework for tonight was to complete a worksheet he had started on in class, so he was able to finish this within the first few minutes of our session. Afterwards, we devoted the rest of our session to reviewing the previous sections of Chapter 7, which we had begun prior to our final review. This included the properties of multiplication and division of exponential terms and rational exponents. A major idea I emphasized was the simplification of negative of fractional exponents. I've noticed that a recurring problem of his is that he has trouble transitioning between the material between different section and combining the ideas into a cohesive whole. I will have to think of a better way to synthesize these ideas.

I met with the student, his mother, and grandmother Sunday afternoon. They informed me of his situation. He had a desk area set up in his room and a list of his missing assignments. He still needs to retrieve some of the assignments from his teachers. We went ahead and worked on a few of the assignments he had ready. I checked over two worksheets on Pythagorean Theorem his mother had helped him with. The answers were correct on the random numbers I selected to check. We also completed an assignment on solving algebraic equations. He had questions about the different steps to go through and how to know when to do which step or operation. After some practice, he improved and was able to complete the assignment correctly. We did the problems on a separate paper, and he was to write down the solutions on his assigned worksheet after I left.

The student has a few worksheets serving as a review study guide for a midterm, which we are using to solve problems. We worked on adding integers and solving some linear equations. Her ability to express herself and write down each step taken in solving equations is a great strength. In doing so, she is able to catch herself before making a mistake. At the end of our session, she was able to solve the linear equations completely on her own. I left with her with a few more equations to work on as practice.

We went over linear equations, particularly switching between point slope form, slope intercept form, and standard form. He did struggle a bit with this, but I taught him some tricks that helped him solve these problems. I gave him some problems from his book to practice before our next meeting.

In this session, the student and I covered graphing box-whisker plots, histograms, and other ways to represent data. We also reviewed representing data through central measurements. The student was excited about the lesson and realized that he has a knack for the material. I left him to finish studying for his exam tomorrow and to prepare his final review packet, which we will go through on Thursday.
