Session Summaries by Essay Editing Tutors

Newport Beach, CA Essay Editing tutoring
We covered paragraph writing and supporting statements concepts. We reviewed the last writing assignment that I gave him, which was on his experience in the Boy Scouts. We really fleshed out the essay by completing statements, and expansion of ideas. The student struggles with finding things to say on paper and he doesn't like to read out loud. I think the best way is to help him focus his thoughts and ideas through conversation, so that he can shape them using words. I left him with the assignment of writing an essay on his favorite food, pizza.

I worked with the student on reading comprehension and summarization. We used a 10% summary writing guide to summarize an article from a magazine. After she completed the summary, I had her begin an opinion based writing assignment. I asked her to back up her assertions with evidence. While she worked on the second assignment I reviewed and edited her summary. We finished by correcting mistakes and discussing ways to improve the structure and clarity of the writing. She was positive and receptive during the session.

The student seemed to not struggle in many areas. His parents want him to have extra help in order to have an advantage with writing. There were no current assignments to work through, so I read through several past assignments to get a sense of where he was with his writing skills. It seemed the issue was with structuring a proper thesis, and properly structuring and having a flow to his argument. We discussed some of this in length. His state exams are coming up soon, so I walked him through some of the writing prompts, to help him brainstorm and sort out his ideas properly.

The student was working on writing a poem with an extended metaphor. To begin, I helped him brainstorm ideas. We tried out a few metaphors (life is like a rainstorm, school is like a minefield, life is like a dance) and ended up with education is like walking up a staircase. As he was writing the poem, I gave him feedback and suggestions, helped him to focus on the extended metaphor that he picked, as well as insert the poetic devices that he needed to include (rhyme, alliteration, figurative language, etc.).

We focused specifically on creative writing. The student was interested in generating ways to get through writer's block. She was genuinely ready and interested in writing. I gave her a number of techniques for generating story ideas using character and location, gave her an acrostic mnemonic device for remembering story structure, and walked her through ways of generating complex, interesting characters. I told her that I want to read her story when she is finished. I want to be sure I am helping her with the subjects that matter most.

In this session, the student worked on a critical analysis essay for her English 102 class. She chose to analyze an opinion piece in a national newspaper on a controversial presidential candidate and focus on the biases and lack of evidence on the author's part. She did a great job with the analysis and put together a well-structured essay. There are some minor grammatical errors that still need work, but I am certain they will improve with time. We also went over the difference between a persuasive and analytical essay.
