"Today we worked on the homework for section 2.5. There were many problems assigned, and they were very lengthy and detail oriented. Due to time, we worked on a couple of problems from each section, mainly so that the student can learn and then demonstrate the process to solve each type of exercise. The section is on polynomials with non-real solutions, in particular: finding zeros, x-intercept, y-intercept, end behaviors, and graphing the function. Furthermore, since these included polynomials with degrees higher than 2, we had to use long division and synthetic division in order to find all the zeros. He has done similar work in Algebra 2 last year; however, he needed a reminder on some of the processes. He seemed to understand the concept, just didn't have the motivation to do the work."
"Today, I helped the student answer to algebraic equation problems using exponentials. Then, we switched to Physics. We worked on kinematic motion in one dimensions and looked at a variety of problems on that topic. The key is setting up the problem correctly with the initial conditions."
"Today, I helped the student with two class lessons and one homework assignment. She did very well with the homework assignment and just needed some help with the questions for the class lessons. Overall she is doing great with the material and really seems to understand it. We will continue with another lesson on Wednesday."
"Today, in TSA training, we covered examples where a flaw in the reasoning had to be found. The strategy was to establish what the argument is, and to brainstorm beforehand what could weaken the argument or make it flawed. Student is gaining the fundamentals of critical thinking including logic, so that in the next phase we can aim for the speed of execution."
"Today, my student and I worked through her homework problems revolving around transforming functions, by translating them horizontally and vertically, and by stretching or compressing them. We also worked with identifying the parent functions of more complex equations, practiced graphing these functions, and finished things off with some algebraic simplification problems."
"Today, she and I predominantly covered functions. We spent a majority of the time reviewing how to determine the domain and range of several types of functions. She struggled with determining the domain and range of square root functions in the beginning of the session, but she was able to determine the domain and range of challenging functions by the end of the session. She also demonstrated a mastery of translating, reflecting, and transforming functions. At the end of the session, we reviewed using the difference quotient equation. She had a great attitude and work ethic during today's review session. It was a pleasure tutoring her!"
