Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student is working on a research essay dealing with the periodic table. Since it is such a vast subject, and because it is for an English class, we worked on ways of narrowing it down and gearing it towards those who aren't great chemistry aficionados. He also took a SAT practice test where he scored in the mid 500's for reading and writing and the high 600's for Math--not bad for a sophomore. I reviewed some of the mistakes he made--simple ones that he wouldn't make if he understood the test better. He can do much better."
"We spent this session discussing the rest of the student's Romeo and Juliet paper. We talked about structural things that would make the paper stronger, as well as how to make more diverse choices for the words used in the paper. I told him if he wanted more feedback on his revisions he could email me a revised copy of the essay that I could look at. I also gave him homework to start reading a book that he is interested in, and to write down any words he isn't familiar with."
"The student shared with me his outline and draft of a persuasive speech on regulating the advertising of unhealthy foods. We discussed his underlying argument and the research behind it, then worked through his language, grammar, and diction. We used Google Docs to collaborate, and I contributed feedback about his speech."
