How can a Japanese tutor help you?

Learning Japanese is difficult no matter what language you grew up speaking, but it presents many particular challenges for those who grew up speaking, reading, and writing in English. Japanese syntax differs greatly from that found in English grammar. For instance, while English uses a subject-verb-object (SVO) word order, Japanese uses a subject-object-verb word order in which the verb is most often the last word in the sentence. Furthermore, Japanese makes significant use of particles, much more than English does. Additionally, and perhaps most obviously, Japanese and English vary drastically in the way that they are each written. Whereas English uses one Latin alphabet, Japanese uses three different writing systems, none of them romanized. Introductory Japanese courses typically first teach students to write in hiragana and katakana, two phonetic Japanese writing systems. However, the introduction of Chinese characters (kanji) into one’s advanced studies can throw a significant wrench into progress with the Japanese language. Suddenly one has to use both phonetic and character-based writing systems—often in the same sentence!

Available nationwide, Varsity Tutors’ one-on-one Japanese tutoring can help you progress toward your goals of becoming fluent in this challenging language. No matter whether you are a middle school or high school student taking your first Japanese class, a college student aiming to fulfill your school’s language requirement, a business professional wanting to add fluency in Japanese to your skill set, or you want to learn the language for other reasons, our tutors can help you.
