We finished up with the last two sections of the practice test: Reading and Mathematics. Her scores were not as good as I had hoped they would be, but we did go over everything and I know she knows the material. I made her walk me through one of the problems that she got wrong on the mathematics and she ended up getting the right answer! Due to the time limit she doesn't have a lot of time so she ends up guessing on a lot of them. I was the same way when testing as well. But as long as she gets most of them done and most of those right she will be fine. I know she will be fine; she just needs to believe in herself, that's all. The rest will take care of itself :)

The student went over some math problems from the practice assessment test. I wanted to review concepts with him. I think this was helpful. He quickly remembered how to do the problems. The student also did some reading. There were blank spaces where he had to use the word bank to find the missing word. The reading was science based with information about amphibian, mammals, etc. The student also made fraction bars to compare equal fractions represented with different denominators. Finally, he worked on math word problems.

I met with the student again tonight as his homework assignment was based on multiplying polynomials and reviewing the laws of exponents. When multiplying polynomials, his initial thought was to only multiply the first numbers of each polynomial and the last numbers. We reviewed the necessary steps when you FOIL a problem: you multiply the first numbers (a & c), the outer numbers (a & d), the inner numbers (b & c), and the last numbers (b & d)... then you combine like terms. [Problem example: (a + b)(c + d)]. Once completely drilling this concept, I feel he had a great session!

The student had done some math practice problems, and she mentioned that she wanted to review some concepts involving plane geometry. We went through a detailed overview of plane geometry as well as coordinate geometry. I then taught her a strategy for doing average and distance problems, and we reviewed ratios and percentages. We ended by going through one experimental science passage which she wanted to practice.

The student has memorized most of the characters in lessons 13-15 in his textbook and he's had a better understanding of the use of the grammar in these lessons. We went through all the dialogues to help him memorize them and connect characters with specific lines, and he felt good with his preparation for the exam after today's session. I pointed out the important grammar sections and highlighted characters for him to focus on. He asked me several questions about how to use certain words and I always explained the uses of characters in different circumstances. He likes the way I explain and apply words according to different scenarios and we both agree learning how to use a character correctly is a very helpful approach in understanding Mandarin Chinese.
