Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I reviewed the material on the homework and he seemed to grasp most of it, but he missed a step on each problem type. Each error was categorical and minor, easily honed and remedied, if not this week, then in the coming semester when he relearns it. He and I then reviewed a couple of previous topics which he seemed to re-grasp very rapidly and also reviewed Exam #4, for which he got most of the answers with only a little prodding. I will try to solidify some of the problematic problem types with this week's homework."
"The student and I started the session discussing college course plans and how math and other subjects could complement her planned major of economics. We then delved into the material, with some good practice on factoring and further practice on completing the square. Our exploration also included some work with calculator methods for solving problems. We wrapped up the session with graphing of functions, both in the calculator and by hand."
"The student and I went over exponential and logarithmic functions. We covered the properties of exponents, properties of e, properties of natural log, and expanding logarithmic expressions. This is all in preparation for her to begin her calculus class knowing as much review as possible from pre-calc. She did very well. I am going to send her a "test" of all that we have done thus far so she can see what she is comfortable with and what she may need help on."
"The student and I went over linearization extrapolations, and how to estimate points. We worked through a couple of practice problems, and then went over the concept of a linear approximation and what it actually was in visual terms. I recommended to him that we schedule two more sessions this weekend so that we can revisit the concept of a derivative and what it is, and then proceed on to the topics at hand, such as extrema. We agreed to hold another session on Saturday and then proceed from there."
"The student and I went over more derivatives and further the application of the first and second derivatives. We went through many problems where we had to use either the first or second derivative to describe what the original function would look like. In addition, we went over finding local extrema and concavity. Again, this was just a new concept to her and it is a lot of information at once, so initially it is hard to digest, but we went through each type of problem, and she was able to work through them with little guidance."
"The student and I went over more implicit differentiation problems to reinforce the concept. We also went over how to interpret wordy math problems and how to answer them. Later tonight, I'll send over some more practice problems for implicit differentiation."
