Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We continued working on polynomials. I showed the student how to do the distributive property and advanced factoring with them. I then went over special rules and situations and how to identify them. When I felt he was ready, he spent the rest of the session completing homework assignments concerning said topics."
"We covered circles, spheres, and cylinder word problems. The student was enthusiastic about the material. We discussed reading the problem slowly and drawing out each situation to get an idea of the problem and how to solve it. I left a few problems for him to work on."
"We covered citations and introduction paragraphs. The student didn't quite understand the citations, but those are tough for everyone. The purpose of an introduction paragraph also didn't seem fully developed in his thinking. We will continue to work on this next session. He was positive today. I tried again to explain the purpose of each part of an introduction paragraph and a thesis statement. I think it helped. With citations, we just walked through them together. He is going to keep plugging away on literature. It was a good session. I think he is making progress in understanding how and what to write. More practice is obviously necessary, as this isn't learned overnight, but he's picking it up quickly."
"We covered clock math, circumference, area of circles, rays and line notation, two types of special triangles, and the Pythagorean theorem. The student always has a great attitude and works hard to understand the material. I encouraged her to take her time when reading questions. I am going to send her a chemistry set and a geometry set. She remembered that the Pythagorean theorem can only be used with right triangles."
"We covered composite shapes and solving area by adding or subtracting known shapes. We discussed volume and relationships of dimensions. The student's main weakness is in seeing the basic elements of complex problems, which he knows how to do. We will work on that more in our next session."
"We covered concepts/terms (e.g., complementary & supplementary angles), proofs, solving for missing variables, missed quiz questions, and miscellaneous practice. The student has a good attitude and shared her goals. She would like a mix in tutoring between lessons and quizzes. I recommended that when writing proofs, she should reason through each step to determine what to write. I shared an interactive site where she can practice proofs. We worked through problems, and I checked them as she completed each question and gave hints if needed."
