"We looked over a draft of the student's essay comparing Baldwin, Rodriguez, and Staple, focusing on writing an introduction, structure, and making sure not to stray from what the source authors are arguing in her analysis."
"Today, the student and I continued working on the 6 traits of effective writing. Last session, we covered half of these traits; today, we finished up with Ideas, Organization, and Conventions. I gave him the key points of each trait as well as essay examples. One example for each trait was terrible and one was good. I had him help me edit and revise the essay excerpts that were terrible. Next, we took a look at his Edison essay that I had him write. We worked on self-reflection/editing of one's own work. Using the checklist, I created for him, he reflected on what he did well and what he needs to revise to make his essay even better. He will be submitting his revisions to me this week along with a 5 paragraph essay on how to be an amazing tennis player using all of the 6 traits of effective writing we have covered."
"We covered quite a bit concepts in today's session. We began the session editing the printed draft of the students newspaper project. Both students gave very thoughtful comments for editing. We then created sentences using words cut out of a magazine. We moved on to learn about and create cinquain poems. We concluded the session with word work, reviewing how to turn words into past tense (ending in ed or d). Great session today!"
"Today the students worked on several skills. We started with reading a book, focusing on the voice of the author. We also reviewed their spelling from last week and took another spelling assessment. We spent the majority of the time developing their stories with details, voice and structure in mind."
"Today was another good progress day for the student. He wrote an incredible first person story (his prompt for the day) about Star Wars and we took two spelling tests. My goal is to get him recognizing patterns of words so that spelling is less difficult. He got a 7/10 and a 3/5 on his tests (the second score was his goal and he asked to take a second five question test to try to make that goal). I think we left the session feeling accomplished and excited."
"Today was another long session. We covered several topics in PowerPoint form, including verb reviews, a guessing game about different countries, a general trivia game, a game on conditionals, and a review about car parts. We often went off on tangents, as we tried to use the PowerPoint material as subjects for conversation. As we conversed, I gave the student feedback, which he liked."
