"Before our first lesson I had him send me a short essay. I corrected it before our lesson and shared the corrections with him, explaining the mistakes. We spent the majority of today's lesson practicing for the speaking portion of the exam. I think we got off to a difficult start with the Question Type 1, but made great progress by the end of the lesson. I gave him a list of speaking prompts, imitating the actual ones used on the test, and asked him to take 15 seconds to prepare, then 45 seconds to speak on the topic and answer the question. At first, I think because he was too focused on selecting the right topic or response, he had difficulty with this task. I encouraged him to pick anything or make something up, as the important part is not what he says but how well he says it. This strategy really helped. He began to speak much more easily with less preparation time, sometimes making up responses and elaborating on them easily. We spend about 1 hour on this portion. The last 30 minutes or so we did some practice reading passages, similar to those found on the exam. He does not seem to have trouble with reading or answering questions on the passages."
"We went through some Math review, some English and some Science practice. The student seems to be very strong on every section."
"The student and I worked on the SAT verbal section, specifically on sentence structure and how to determine which sentences were grammatically correct."
