How can a Math tutor help you?

Is your child beginning to fall behind in their math class? Are they struggling every night with concepts such as probability, converting measurements, or solving basic equations? If these scenarios sound familiar, then it may be time to call in a private tutor for your student. Varsity Tutors can help you find professional math tutoring in New Jersey. A private tutor can meet with your child at a time and place that works around your schedule. They can even meet online!

New Jersey math tutoring offers numerous advantages that classroom learning alone does not. For one, your child can work with their tutor in a one-on-one setting. This allows for the lessons to be customized for your student and their personal learning goals and needs. They can work with their tutor on determining exactly which areas of math they are most confused by, and then receive immediate feedback and clarification on those topics. Whether it's fractions or absolute values causing the confusion, their tutor can help. Unlike in a classroom setting, your child can also pick and choose which areas to cover and which areas to skip. If they understand estimation and approximation but are confused by fractions, then their tutor can skip the areas they understand and cover the troublesome concepts in depth.

Session Summaries by Math Tutors

New Jersey, NJ Math tutoring
This session we covered linearization. We went over why we do linearization, how it will be used in the future, and how to perform the operations. We did several problems and he now knows the procedure. We do need to review some simple pre-calc concepts, such as function terminology and notation, because most of his mistakes were from incorrect substitutions. We made a table and discussed how to find those values without any guesswork. I will continue quizzing him on this topic, as it is really important for the rest of the course.

The student and I worked extensively today on graphing linear functions. We followed a step-by-step procedure for examining an equation (in the form of y = mx + b), finding two coordinates, and then graphing a line. Areas for improvement are, again, mainly due to arithmetic. We discussed how it was important to not "eye-ball" answers, and that writing each step in solving an equation can really eliminate many errors. Content-wise the student understands the material, now we must work towards consistency.

the student and I went over solving equations with multiple variables. He was able to orient himself well when it came to approach a problem. The student was encouraged to check his work at the end of each problem to ensure he has the questions correct. The student is bright and understands the subject, but may need guidance occasionally in organizational skills.

We started the session with a review of topics covered in session 1 and 2. We began his chapter 5 review, which deals with polynomials. Factoring and FOILing are very challenging skills to get acquainted with. The student struggled with these concepts, as all students do. Much more work will be required to master these techniques. Numerous example problems will aid in his understanding. We did polynomial expressions when operating with domains, simplification, multiplication, and division. The student is making phenomenal progress. I have tasked him with working on his chapter 5 homework until our next meeting.

We went over some of his older schoolwork concerning matrices. We covered the entire chapter ensuring he understood how to compute inverse matrices and how to multiply them. We then moved onto quadratic equations, how to factor them, find points of intersection and graphing. He seemed to understand the concepts better.
