Today the student and I picked up where we left out from the previous lesson in our outline. Today we finished the outline for the middle part of the novella he is writing, and moved into the climactic final scene. He had made a little bit of progress in his writing, but not much. I wasn't too concerned about this, since we needed to finish the outline first. He wanted details for the story including street names, river names, and where people would be facing instead of concentrating on the big action and how that was going to progress the story. He still has a very good attitude and is excited about his spy novella. After we completed the outline for the climax, we noticed that our villain didn't get enough time in the story to develop his character. For homework, I asked him to go back in our outline and find a place for two conversations involving the villain to grow his character more before we meet him in the final scene.

The student did a great job today. Both his mother and I really want him to work on his critical thinking and put that into his writing. I had him do a really interesting writing assignment about technology and whether or not it makes us feel alone. I had him read four articles and watch a video. We went over the articles together in great detail. I had him highlight key parts of the article - these parts he could develop further into the essay. Next, he and I planned and outlined the essay. He thought of the topic sentence for each paragraph completely on his own. He had some difficulty starting the essay. We worked through this together, and I suggested that he start the essay with an anecdote. He completed it by the end of our session. I'll be looking the essay over, emailing it back to him with my notes, and he will write a final draft for next week.

The student received a school report for the previous quarter that suggested some areas for improvement. He is a very bright student and, in sessions, he demonstrates some excellent critical thinking and is able to clearly express himself. Such expression through writing is one of the key areas that he and I will continue to work on. During the session, we reviewed the report and discussed reasons why his results did not always reflect his abilities. We went over a few strategies to help with reading comprehension (reading aloud, keeping a plot notebook, etc.), and then discussed how to use evidence to answer a question and how to formulate an arguable thesis. In future sessions, we will continue to work on these skills.

We reviewed the student's rough draft literary analysis of a short story by Kate Chopin, "The Story of an Hour." Looking at the student's draft, we closely analyzed her three body paragraphs (regarding character development, setting, and plot). I asked her to talk me through her ideas for each paragraph, and how they connected with the Chopin story. As she talked, I jotted down notes, capturing the student's own words. Then I showed her what she understood about the piece but was struggling to put into writing. This seemed to be a great help to her. Then we worked with diagramming the Chopin piece and also her essay, looking at connections. This tutoring session revolved around deepening her understanding of the Chopin piece, honing the theme of her essay, and strengthening connections between her essay's theme and body paragraphs.
