How can a tutor help you master the PSAT?

As you begin to think about applying to colleges, you are probably considering whether or not to take the Preliminary SAT, or PSAT. This is a standardized test administered every fall, created to parallel the experience of taking the SAT. Taking this exam can be useful as a study tool for taking the SAT later, but the PSAT also determines whether or not you are eligible for the National Merit Scholarship Program. Qualifying as a finalist for this scholarship could help you get into the college you want and help you to be able to afford tuition. But, how do you begin to prepare for the four sections of the PSAT? Varsity Tutors could help you make your PSAT study sessions more productive by finding you a tutor in New Haven.

There are four sections on the PSAT, which takes two hours and 45 minutes total to complete. There are two mathematics sections and two critical reading/writing sections. You must be able to apply a variety of algebra formulas, problem-solving, and data analysis. The writing sections involve critical reading and discussion skills, including the ability to parse data from graphs and charts and understand text complexity. Most students are better at one of these areas than the other, but with a tutor's help, you might improve your skills in the weaker of these areas, so you can successfully complete the test. You can easily connect with a qualified PSAT tutor in New Haven, CT, by contacting one of our educational directors.

Session Summaries by PSAT Tutors

New Haven, CT PSAT tutoring
We've been working on verbally relaying similarities and differences when viewing pictures, then creating a narrative description of each. Student has shown great improvement in his ability to engage verbally and answer in more conversational form. He's also shown great improvement in his ability to recognize complex patterns, symmetry and asymmetry. Topics reviewed in math included basic fractions, telling time and counting by divisions of numbers (5,10 etc.). Topics in reading comprehension included proper/improper nouns, adjectives, fiction/non-fiction and exercises in vocabulary from contextual clues.

The student and I worked through most of the verbal section today. We covered synonyms and fill-in-the-blanks as well as their corresponding strategies. She had a little trouble with coming up with proper words in context, but after I did a couple with her, she seemed to be getting better. Next session we will cover two-blanks, reading, and the essay. We will be doing video chat sessions over the holiday break, and I think I will have another session with her after I am back.

Today, the student and I focused on the reading section of the ACT. We first ran through the vocabulary cards, and he has done a great job working on those in his spare time. We then walked through a nonfiction reading passage together, discussing which words or phrases he might underline and how to make notes as he moves through the reading in the margins that will help him focus the answers to the subsequent questions. We targeted our time on strategizing around how to ignore distractions and center his mind on the passage. We then talked through the different types of questions that will be asked about the passage. We ended the day applying the strategies to a fiction passage.

First I went over the student's previous ACT scores in order to get an idea as far as what to review with her. Her math scores were the lowest so we focused on that for the first session. I had an extra ACT book that we used to review from and that I left with her to continue to work with throughout the week. We went over around 40 practice problems and talked about various strategies for solving them. I made a note of certain topics that appeared throughout multiple problems so that she could make the best use of the practice. We talked about general ACT strategies like how to guess and eliminate answers. We talked about what problems she could do on her own before our next session so that we can best utilize that time.

The student and I spent today going through most of the rest of his practice test, on the English and Math sections. His general grammar rules are good. His problem area is the questions that require comprehension of the passage, since he tends to skip sentences that don't have direct questions asked about them. Once he actually reads, he does much better. We also talked about a few tricks for handling the math section. He tends to mix up positive and negative signs. We spent a lot of time thinking through problems and working on checking his work when his answers didn't match any of the options. He needs to keep practicing these skills on his own. I emailed him an additional practice test to take. I think it would be beneficial for him to sit down this weekend and focus on taking it while implementing the things we worked on.
