Session Summaries by MCAT Tutors

New Haven, CT MCAT tutoring
My tenth MCAT Verbal tutoring session with the student went well. He completed 2 practice tests and maintained the average score that he would like. We focused our session on going over additional practice passages in the workbook. The student answered the majority of the questions correctly. As we reviewed the questions he answered incorrectly, he understood why the correct answers were the best choices. I encouraged him to read every answer choice under a question, eliminate the incorrect answers, and select the best answer to the question stated, regardless if another answer choice was also correct. I also suggested that he use all of the time allotted in the exam to find the best answers for the most questions. Before his MCAT exam on Wednesday, he will complete the remaining passages in Practice Test 4. He will also complete the remaining practice passages in the workbook.

In this session, again, we went over a past exam. We're able to cut his time down to roughly 8 minutes per passage. We talked specifically about working on when he should refer back to the passage and the importance of really understanding the question stem before attempting to answer a question. He'll be taking another practice exam before we meet again, and maybe a practice section out of his book.

I asked how his test went under timed conditions and he said that it went well, but he required a few minutes longer than allowed. We did two passages at a time today under timed conditions to see how he was performing. He did quite well, but was still working until right about the timer was up. I told him to do a couple more sample tests over the weekend to see what his score is. I also said that he is scoring quite well, so there would not be much more I could help him with after a couple more sessions, since he does not want help with the science portions.

This was our first session, so we talked a lot about the student's prior experience with the test and studying so far. We evaluated several strategies for attacking verbal passages and what he thinks his weaknesses are now. We went through several passages in his test prep book and looked at the answers he selected based on the passages and how he could use different strategies to get to the correct answer. We have set up a plan for verbal practice, including me sending him daily articles to read, summarize, and review author's viewpoint and tone. We will meet again on Thursday and discuss some of those articles as well as the practice test he intends to take on his own tomorrow.

The student took practice test assessments 5 and got a 9 which is improvement. We went over two of the most difficult humanities passages, paragraph by paragraph. We also discussed the question stems before we went through the second passage. Next time we will wrap things up.

The student and I continued working with General Chemistry topics during our session. We began with a review and practice set on reaction kinetics, which she seemed to have a solid foundation already built in. We only strengthened this with questions designed to target common misconceptions and novel applications. After this we worked through a practice passage in gases, which she needed help with, however after explanation we seemed to clear her misunderstandings. We will revisit this topic later to ensure how well she retained it. Next we practiced concepts relating to bonds and molecular geometry with a passage and finished the session with several discrete question testing various aspects of electrochemistry.
