Today the student and I went over his homework problems and made several corrections. Then we moved on to multiplying and dividing fractions after reviewing greatest common factors. We also completed several practice problems with positive and negative mixed numbers, as well as adding and subtracting decimals. I assigned new practice problems for him to complete before our next meeting.

In today's lesson we first reviewed the U.S. presidents; The student knew more than he did last week but does not have them all memorized, yet. We then reviewed his reading assignment for the last week, with me asking him questions to test his comprehension and recall. I then gave him a shorter review reading assignment from the History book. He also has comprehension questions at the end. I then gave him a diagnostic test, covering his overall knowledge of U.S. history. I reminded him of some strategies to use in answering questions and he got more than half the questions correct, without necessarily knowing much about the material being referenced. I then assigned him the rest of the first chapter in his textbook as homework, as well as having the U.S. presidents memorized in order.

Today, the student and I worked on his history terms that were due on Monday and then began to work through the terms that were for later in the week. We also reviewed some of the previous terms and discussed the ways in which they all related. He is doing a great job thinking critically about the terms and placing them within their historical context.

Today we covered materials from Chapter 8 of the text, focusing on concepts from 1800-1820 and somewhat beyond (to demonstrate changes over time). We also reviewed the rubric used for DBQ essays. I've provided the student with access to a quiz/flashcards on my dashboard and suggested that she work on more flashcards for key terms and events. She should work on learning/memorizing more key terms/facts so that she can focus her time on analysis and synthesis, rather than recollection.

We went over the Articles of Confederation, and I was able to swat up the big ideas that the board emphasizes. She does not have a grade in the class, but she was able to follow my lead with very little prompting; she appears to have a very good base of knowledge. We will work on some writing for history stuff, and she will email me to let me know what she wants to go over for the next lesson. I think she will benefit from our sessions, but she also seems bright, so I hope she gets that coveted "5".
