Session Summaries by GRE Tutors

New Haven, CT GRE tutoring
My MCAT Verbal tutoring session with the student went well. He completed the assigned practice passages in the review MCAT Verbal workbook. We focused our session on going over additional practice passages. He answered the majority of the questions correctly. I encouraged him to read every answer choice under a question before selecting one of them. I also suggested that he write down brief paragraph summaries on his map along with key words. This will help him to better understand the passage and find the best answers to the questions.

I met with the student today and he primarily wants to cover the verbal reasoning portion of the test. We covered passages together, identifying the purpose of each paragraph and its meaning, then listing the main purpose or thesis of a passage and the author's viewpoint. We then went through the questions and I had him try and answer the question before looking at the answer choices when applicable.

We went over another few passages of verbal reasoning, now focusing specifically on timing. Instead of letting him take his own time, I let a timer go off every 10 minutes. We found that his speed improved without much damage to his accuracy, so we plan to shave 30 seconds off his average time each time we meet until we get an average of 8 minutes per passage. He was struggling with accuracy in longer passages where there was more to retain, and there was the danger of assuming the right answer instead of checking in the passage, but overall there seems to be a lot of improvement. I assigned another practice section to take and told him to give himself the same 10 minutes per passage. Overall, I think his progress is going well.

We spent the first hour reviewing the practice test that the student took over the weekend. It seems that he is struggling most with deciding when to choose the most literal answer, or one that involves more deductive reasoning. We discussed how to avoid distractor answer choices, and how to spot language that is too extreme based on the tone of the passage. During the second hour we worked on practice passages. I watched him read the passage and answer the corresponding questions. He did very well, and only got a few questions wrong altogether. We discussed fine-tuning his use of time and maximizing use of underlining.

This was our first session, so we started by discussing the student's prior experience with studying, and previous exam attempts. This allowed us to review study methods, and approaches to the MCAT as a whole. Prior to this session, I had him read two articles, and time himself, and respond to basic questions. We took time to review these articles, and his general approach to the passages. I will continue to send him passages, with the expectation that he complete two every day in many different fields (focusing on business and culture/history, as these were identified weaknesses).

We covered her incorrect answers on her past GRE exam. She needs to do more practice to work on her timing. We discussed more essay tactics. I asked her to do more verbal reasoning practice.
