Math is one of the core foundations of a student's education. They will encounter math throughout the entirety of their educational journey. And that journey begins with elementary math. A student's success in elementary math will play a big role in how successful they will be in later, more advanced math courses. Without a solid understanding of elementary math, students have no hope of understanding the trigonometric, geometric, and algebraic principles that await them in middle school and high school. Session Summaries by Elementary Math Tutors

New Haven, CT Elementary Math tutoring
The student quickly finished his weekly packet with only a bit of help from me. Given that this was our last session together, and knowing he had an interest in it, I brought an activity to do with him during the second half of the session. We created a triangular box using origami, and in the process explored various geometric concepts. These concepts included: vertical, horizontal, parallel, perpendicular, right angles, and equilateral triangles. He was pleased with the result.

We did math problems to study for his upcoming midterm. I went though his old tests and quizzes and made problems similar to the ones he had previously gotten wrong or lost points on. He did very well. I think he will do well on the final.

The student has a math test tomorrow (Thursday), so we focused exclusively on studying for that. We did conversions of hours/minutes/seconds and mile/km etc. and money conversions etc. She definitely has the material down. She has a science test next week, so we'll focus there for our next session.

We discussed equivalent fractions and did many problems with them. We also did some story problems. Something new - we closed our books and did math problems orally such as 1217 x 2= . The student was very excited about this activity and wanted more. Then we moved to some homework on State History. There were three vocabulary words to learn and three questions to answer about the subject. We finished up with some comprehension activities in reading workbooks. No concerns . . . he improves with every lesson.

The student worked through a fairly long set of homework problems. It started with questions specifically about polygons, then moved on to a cumulative section that tested a wide variety of concepts. I helped him notice and correct some of the mistakes he made along the way. He did a good job staying focused. We also worked on a special project/worksheet on the Fibonacci sequence.

We started the session by using flashcards to go over numbers 1-30. We then moved on to reading short stories. I read the stories first and had the student follow after. We finished by going over the sight words (dog, car, did, pig, it, big) repeatedly. For our sight words, I would like to focus on getting her to recognize the first letter of the sight words instead of guessing.
