How can a tutor help you master the ACT?

You've worked hard through high school to keep up a good GPA, take part in extracurricular activities, and even work or volunteer to produce a good resume for your potential future academic career. Now, you're looking at colleges that can allow you to get the best education in a career you're interested in pursuing or allow you to try to get the most effective all-around education. Schools want to know about you, too, which is the reason they ask for a great deal of information in their applications. One of these pieces of necessary information is a score from a College Board-approved standardized test, like American College Testing, or the ACT. To prepare for the ACT, you need to be willing to tackle the test sections, including English, math, reading, science, and the optional writing section. This is a lot of information to cover. Call Varsity Tutors' educational directors to get connected with an experienced ACT tutor in New Haven, CT, to try to help you prepare.

Your tutor can review most of the content areas with you or just give attention to the ones that are going to provide the greatest challenge for you. Your tutor will quickly assess your strengths and weaknesses. Then, he or she may be able to tailor lessons to better fit your specific needs. This will streamline the educational process to strive to ensure that you learn in a quick and efficient manner. An ACT tutor in New Haven could help you make the most of your abilities.

During today's session, the student practiced ACT Math, Reading, and English. We reviewed the homework he had worked on over the past few days. I timed him as he completed several passages of each section. I can tell that he is really getting the timing down which has been our main focus throughout the sessions. Since he is completing a practice test this weekend, we reviewed strategies for test day.

I worked for 1.5 hours with the student on Saturday 12/07 and Sunday 12/08. This Sunday's session was our last session. I think he is on track to do very well on his ACT. He just needs to focus and read the question fully and make certain to he answering what the question asks. If he paces himself correctly and focuses, he will certainly do very well!

For this week, the student did a full practice ACT test. His score was a 28 (English: 32, Math: 28, Reading: 26, Science: 25), which is a several points improvement from his first test, and also close to his goal score. He did some practice problems to help him remember how to approach the math section.

At this session, the student and I reviewed her use of the "back to front" strategy for the reading section, in which she would complete the natural science reading, then the more abstract/complicated/boring humanities and social science questions, and end on the more engaging fiction section. She said this method wasn't any more or less effective, but she was considering trying to do the middle sections first, followed by the fiction and natural science questions.

The student and I did problems in each of the sections and discussed our testing strategy tomorrow. The most important takeaway is that it's possible to get nice scores without answering everything. A nice score comes from getting right everything that you know how to do and not guessing on the hardest questions. It's great to struggle with and try to answer the hardest questions, but it's not great to guess on them if you are unsure. We talked about staying focused, working with time limits, and how to approach each section. We talked about some math tricks and the importance of process of elimination. I feel like this was one of our best sessions and engagement was really high. He feels confident going into the test tomorrow. So long as he stays focused, uses process of elimination, and approaches the test the way we talked about, he will achieve his goals.
