The student is preparing for the final exam on Friday. She had questions on enthalpy, vapor pressure, boiling point, crystal field theory, and heat of summation. We worked through several problems, and the student did well preparing for the exam. If she has additional questions before the exam on Friday, she can e-mail me.

The student has started qualitative analysis labs, so we spent this time discussing strategies for her moving forward. She was a little confused about the point of the labs, so we started with that (which is essentially to compare the reactions of your unknown sample to the reactions of known samples to identify the known). We narrowed down the ions that could be in her solution by using the tests she'd already put forth. We talked about which ions to start testing for first, how to narrow the list down further, and what to do if she's stuck between two ions.

We covered stoichiometry and unit conversions. We had a good breakthrough with stoichiometry (balancing equations) with writing down the number of each element on either side of the arrow for a chemical equation. The student will continue working through the practice book and bring up any questions he has throughout the week.

We reviewed chemistry for a surprise test tomorrow. Topics included thermochemistry (Hess's Law, heat of reaction, and enthalpy on per mole basis), calorimetry (physical and chemical energy transfer to water in calorimeter), heat curve diagram (latent and sensible heating), heat of fusion, heat of vaporization, and balancing equations. I told her that the calorimetry equation tells you about the proportionality to mass and temperature increase, while the enthalpy per mole is a rate like velocity.
