"We continued working on Lesson 3; which covered the quadratic formula, discriminate, factoring, and substitution in polynomial equations."
"I was very happy with the progress the student made today with practicing several pre-algebra topics. We began by discussing how to multiply variables with exponents, and after a few examples and practice problems, he demonstrated proficiency. We moved on to the inverse of multiplication, simplifying variables (sometimes with integers as well) that were divided by like variables. He also learned how to use exponents with fractions, as well as to deal with negative exponents. We finished the section with a survey of the area and perimeter (circumference) formulas for squares, rectangles, and circles. I plan to review this concept with him during our next session until he feels much more comfortable with it."
"The student reviewed some critical fundamentals of calculus especially relating to integration and the change of variables technique that is nearly synonymous with any but the most elementary integration. He reported that he "blew through" the integration homework set that had had him stumped. A part of his research was to purchase a university physics text and review the calculus approach to physics. He used electric charge fundamentals and the integration approach to basic derivations to reconnect calculus and real world physical science. He has wrapped up Module 2 a little early and today we began Chapter 9, Module 3, conic sections, parameterized equations, and polar coordinates."
"We covered conversions, so inches to miles, quarts to gallons, etc. We also briefly looked over mixed fractions, but she already had a clear understanding of them which is why we didn't spend too much time on it. She was concerned about making small mistakes that would lead to incorrect answers, so I advised her to take her time on her quizzes and tests to reduce the chance of making an error. Additionally, we reviewed her homework problems and extra credit quiz."
"We went over foundations in functions and order of operations, and practiced plugging values in for x and calculating functions. We went over peculiarities of working with order of operations, focusing on specific examples that demonstrated a need for using PEMDAS."
"In today's session, we reviewed past concepts like always and subtraction was introduced. She is fairly comfortable with addition with single digits. For subtraction, from today's session, I can see that she is also very comfortable with subtraction of 0, 1, and same number subtraction. For the next session, we will also go over subtraction of 2, 3, and possibly 4 depending on how well she does. She is memorizing addition fairly quickly. Will be sure to provide additional homework for her to do next time as well."
