Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we reviewed how to find the area of a regular polygon. We also covered a new equation to find the area of a triangle using the SAS theorem. The student was very enthusiastic and confident in the material we covered. Today was a mix of reviewing current information while also revisiting older concepts that have already been covered. This was used as a strategy to aid in time management by addressing the question "Do I know any mathematically sound and appropriate shortcuts that will cut down some time during an exam?" From the last session, he has superbly gotten comfortable with the concepts of finding the area of a polygon. This clearly manifested itself in an increase in his pace of work, quality and pace of his walk throughs, and confidence in his answers. He and I parted today's session with no more questions left to ask and as well as two practice problems that will be reviewed upon the next session."
"The student has a test this Tuesday on similar polygons and scale factors. We spent the session reviewing practice problems he was given as a practice test for the class. He did very well setting up proportions for similar polygons to solve the shapes. Some of the difficult problems consisted of similar triangles with the smaller triangle inside the larger triangle. The diagrams made it difficult to see the corresponding sides, so we discussed the strategy of redrawing the shapes separately. We were able to review one problem reviewing scale factors, and he will continue to study on his own for his exam."
"I assisted the student discussing her geometry homework which consisted of finding arc-lengths and angle measurements in circles formed by chords, tangents and secants. We finished in 50 minutes so after taking a 5 minute break I gave her extra practice problems so that she would have extra reinforcement. She did very well and was able to recall most of the formulas."
"Today, we covered chapter 10 which encompassed finding the areas of regular and irregular polygons. The student struggles primarily with the algebra component, but has improved greatly. He will benefit from memorizing the area formulas and special triangle rules prior to his test."
"The student and I continued to review various kite/trapezoid topics by practicing problems given to her on a worksheet. That section marked the end of chapter 8, so I decided to review prerequisite Algebra and basic math topics such as adding/subtracting fractions, balancing equations, and working with negative. These are all skills I thought she had room to improve on. They often inhibit her ability to solve geometry questions even when she understands the geometry topic."
"We covered surface area and volume for the student's test tomorrow. We worked on practice problems off of his review sheet. I am emailing him the notes, as well as a sheet of important equations for him to review and memorize. I emphasized particularly to have him make drawings for each problem, to clarify what he is looking for."
