Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student starts school tomorrow. Today's games practiced specifically 7x tables, which are a struggle for him, as well as an introduction to division through missing factors. I didn't mention that this relates to division, and he did well with the concept. Getting him to think about multiplication in different ways will help the facts become memorized."
"The student wanted to start with reading, so she read aloud in her chapter book. After reading a chapter, she wanted to move on to math, so we began working on addition, building on what we've been working on. Finally, she wanted to begin working on a comic book, so she wrote the story out, and I helped her edit it."
"The student wanted to work with the coins and their values some more, so we began our session with that. We then looked through a world atlas I brought from my classroom. We talked about the things Italy and America have in common. During our next session, we will make a Venn diagram depicting the differences and similarities."
"The student was a little reluctant to work out of her math book today, so we spent the first half hour catching up on problems we had skipped last week. I was pleasantly surprised to see her get excited about filling in a two-way table, and even hoping for another one like it! She was able to quickly and efficiently identify variables and relate them to one another. Afterwards, I incorporated some extra multiplication and division "color by number" worksheets. She responded very well to coloring! This way, she was able to practice multiplying and dividing small numbers with the benefit of instant gratification. She made a very good effort with each problem and demonstrated a system of finding answers (counting by twos, threes, etc.). We will continue to work on her familiarity with times tables so that she relies less and less on counting on her fingers."
"The student was a very fast learner who at first needed help with dividing fractions, but he picked it up right away! After I went over a few problems with him from his homework, he was able to complete problems with minimal guidance. He maintained a positive attitude throughout the entire session. I recommended that he study more problems to better understand patterns in math. Overall, he did an excellent job and would like to schedule another session for tomorrow!"
"The student was able to complete a majority of the lesson. As we began reading, I noticed he was distracted so we moved to phonics and writing, and then he did much better. The flash card warm-up went smoothly and he made no errors. We practiced time and I introduced 5 minute increments. We also practiced shapes and drawing those shapes, he did excellent on this and clearly knows his shapes. Overall, he did a very good job."
