One very effective technique we worked on was trying to use just a handful of rules to guide each problem, specifically "always simplify," and "always get x by itself." The student and I started the session by checking the assignment problems. The wrong solutions to the problems were revised and redone. I gave him one sum to check how much he understood the concept. We started with the concept of set difference, and he understood it, so I gave him a problem to practice. Then I explained the concept of product of sets and gave him problems to practice. Towards the end, I gave him enough problems for practice.

We went over domain and range, finding equations for circles by completing the square, graphing various types of functions, analyzing graphs of functions and describing their traits, memorizing shapes of the parent functions, and using and converting to and from standard form and slope-intercept form.
