Session Summaries by Statistics Tutors

Nebraska, NE Statistics tutoring
The student and I spent our session working on lots of practice problems for math today. She is preparing for a quiz tomorrow on inter-conversions of decimals, fractions, and percentages. She is understanding the concepts well but needs to practice better habits in slowing down and checking her work as well as staying focused for the entirety of the homework or quiz. She is smart and has a good attitude about learning, but she gets frustrated and bored after doing a lot of math work and starts making mistakes when she gets frustrated.

The student and I spent the entirety of our lesson today working on his homework that's due tomorrow, which was focused around more difficult limits than those we talked about last time. He is quickly getting the hang of calculus despite just starting it, and he already is doing an outstanding job of not making as many small errors. Part of the reason for that is that I am repeatedly encouraging him to write out as much as possible, even though he can usually do the necessary mental math in his head. He and I have another session tomorrow, where we will review more limits before his next quiz.

The student and I spent the first part of our session working on his History homework. He has a deep understanding of the way historical events happen, and we worked on pushing forward to understanding their significance. Afterwards, he showed me how he takes notes in his flipped math class, and together we worked on simplifying radicals.

The student and I spent this session going over practice exercises in his textbook in preparation for his exam. He seems to have a good grasp on normal distributions, boxplots, and histograms; I'm confident in his abilities thus far.

The student and I spent this session working together on her homework. This evening we primarily covered regression and many of the ideas associated with regression lines: coefficient of determination, residuals, residual plots, standard error of the estimate, etc. When relevant, we also discussed interpreting these values and calculating them using a TI-83/4 family calculator, which the student has. Again, as we were doing predefined homework questions, the session was pretty straightforward, but she did very well. Importantly, she did a great job asking for clarification where necessary, which I really appreciated. A good first session.

The student and I started by going over his quiz and then he worked through practice problems to reinforce the tougher concepts. He's actually quite strong with the calculating once he has a grasp of the concept. As things get more abstract, it will most likely take some time to feel totally confident. Great first session!
