Session Summaries by Elementary Math Tutors

Nebraska, NE Elementary Math tutoring
The student starts school tomorrow. Today we did a review of multiplication facts and then played capture the square. We reviewed how to multiply 2x1 and 3x1 digits, which we extended to a game. He was looking for support during the lesson, but used his chart, which gives him great review.

The student summarized Chapter 20 of It's Not the End of the World. She read Chapter 21 and wrote a paragraph about what happened. I noted that she was rereading to make sure it made sense. She will read Chapters 22 and 23 for Wednesday's lesson. She did well on the dividing fractions worksheet. She clearly enjoys solving math equations! She began the novel, Ella Enchanted. I found the novel online, so she will continue reading it. We also worked on identifying prepositions. She had to identify all of the prepositions in each row of words. She did well with this.

The student summarized what she had read on her own from the book that we are reading. She read more pages, retelling and predicting as she read. The she read a passage and sequenced the events of the story. In math, we reviewed multiplication and subtraction facts. She is very fluent with her multiplication facts. We then practiced with telling time flashcards, reviewing different ways to say the times. Then we worked with money flashcards. She added bills and mixed coins. This was a little challenging to her. I encouraged her, and she was able to work through with a positive attitude. I assigned her several pages to read before our next session.

The student tackled converting units of length and time. She also reviewed subtraction, multiplication, and division. For division, she drew pictures of equal groups to solve. Again, she is a super hard worker. She listens very well and is able to talk through the steps needed to solve a problem.

The student told me that most of the week was spent introducing the teachers and newer students. He seems to not have experienced any challenging material in school yet. I used our time today to review his homework, and then I continued to work on his multiplication and division skills so that he can remain in a good position in his curriculum, if not ahead of what he is learning.

The student wanted to do problems on her dry board again, so we did. She got a few problems wrong, and some right. The wrong ones were: 6+6, 3+3, 7+7, and 9+9. I reviewed again the way to remember when the number one is added to a number. Reading: I took a book that I had gotten from the library: "Olivia Becomes a Vet." I thought that the student should start reading from a book and not just the sentences that she had from kindergarten. She read slowly, but mostly correctly. She still does well sounding out words phonetically. The only word she had trouble with was "know." The silent letters give her trouble. We will work more on these next time.
