Session Summaries by Calculus Tutors

Nebraska, NE Calculus tutoring
The student and I reviewed linear equations, solving a system of linear equations, and delved a little bit into quadratic equations. Next week I would like to review linear equations briefly, and then talk about solving and factoring quadratic equations.

The student and I reviewed material for her test in Algebra this week. She wanted to work on multi-step equations, and I also had us work on combining like terms, order of operations, evaluating expressions, and combining polynomials. We did a lot of practice problems today! The student really started to use the practice to focus on how she writes down her work on the page; her neatness improved greatly as she practiced (and she got better at writing neater and conserving space). Most importantly, her small mistakes (like forgetting a term, writing the incorrect sign, or incorrectly writing information) decreased significantly! I pointed this out to her, and she seemed pleased with the outcome of her neatness efforts. I told her that she should try to continue practicing her work on her homework this way, so that she builds the habit.

The student and I reviewed over her math notes from the whole unit and spent time reinforcing the concepts she's been practicing in class. I looked over her previous assignments from this unit and helped her work through all of the problems she hadn't answered yet or had answered incorrectly. I noticed that most of the problems she'd answered incorrectly were due to silly mistakes such as writing in that she needed to add a number, and then forgetting to add that number in the next line. She clearly knows what she is doing, but could probably benefit from getting in the habit of double checking her work before moving on to the next question.

The student and I reviewed reading for the book Night by Elie. The student took a quiz that covered the complete book to verify understanding of the information read. The student answered 12 out of 15 questions correct. We also reviewed Language Arts homework for accuracy. The student should study for the vocabulary test and the science test that are on Friday.

The student and I reviewed some math worksheets that he had been given, in order to review for an upcoming test on Friday. The student did well for the most part; he did need some review on exponents, especially negative exponents, and dealing with numbers in scientific notation. Specifically, he needs a bit more practice understanding the concept of comparing two numbers written in scientific notation. We went over the idea, and he seems confident about the test on Friday. He kept one worksheet undone, so he could complete it for further practice and review on Thursday, right before the test.

The student and I reviewed the homework she had already completed, and then she finished her current homework for the class. She struggles the most with problems that require a little bit more abstract thinking, so this is something we'll continue to work on.
