Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I went over another couple of practice passages and found that she needs to take more time and refer back to the passages more often. Conceptually, she's doing fine, but she falls into common trap answers. We also continued going through Ochem material, which is going well so far, but a little slower than we'd like. I think additional practice will really help tighten up her test-taking skills, and plan to assign more as we finish up more Ochem material."
"The student took practice tests since we last met. She did well on both tests and did not need help reviewing the first test. We went over the questions she got wrong on the Physical Sciences section of the other test. She also brought up a few questions from the Biological Sciences section to confirm. The student seems to be doing well on the material overall. She will continue working on practice questions and exams to clean up problem areas and to learn to catch mistakes more often."
"The student and I met to cover the topic of acid/base chemistry--a topic she'd missed several questions on during her first MCAT test. She'd been able to do a good amount of pre-reading prior to the session, so she was very comfortable with the calculations related to calculating the pH of a strong acid or base solution; I was also pleasantly surprised by the work she'd done on practicing math related to these calculations as math is her weaker point. This allowed us to spend more time practicing the more difficult calculations related to weak/acids and bases and buffer systems and to look at two passages on this topic as well. I assigned her three additional passages, a topical test, and nearly 100 discrete questions to continue practicing this material. Our next session will be Thursday, when we plan to cover periodic motion and waves."
"The student reviewed the thermodynamics, thermochemistry, solutions, and acid and bases sections. She in particular wanted to review solutions, so we went through some sample problems and I told her to go back and review colligative properties, Raoult's and Henry's Laws, and work through some more solubility product problems. She had a better understanding of acids and bases, and will review thermodynamics in more detail. I asked that she take a full practice test over the weekend after finishing her review of thermodynamics and solutions."
"Today we covered more acid/base material and finished up with Ksp material. She made strides in understanding logarithmic functions and how to solve for them. She is going to practice the acid/base worksheet and continue to practice her MCAT math."
"The student did a full quantitative section today. She felt as though she was struggling from the get go, but in reality, she only missed 1 question in the first 12, which is excellent. Consequently, the questions were getting quite difficult. She scored about a 39, but had to guess on the last 8. She needs to think of using the answer choices on hard problems sooner."
