How can a Writing tutor help you?

Written language is a skill that must be understood in order to succeed in academic and personal life. If your child may not articulate his or her thoughts, you may find that they may fall behind in courses like science, math, history, and others. Your child may face writing requirements on various exams in their educational life, including the ACT and SAT in high school. Writing comes in four types: narrative, expository, persuasive, and descriptive. Each bares a particular purpose, such as explaining something or describing an event or action. If you're a parent whose child needs additional assistance in his or her writing course or you need a refresher on writing, contact Varsity Tutors for help finding writing tutors in Nashville, Tennessee.

With the guidance of the educational directors at Varsity Tutors, you may be connected to an expert writing tutor in Nashville who is capable of optimizing your child's study time. Your child is connected to the tutor based on your child's skill level in writing, the purpose of their tutoring needs, their personal goals for writing, and their individual learning style. With a writing tutor, you may prepare for a career in writing, boost your abilities in your professional life, or add a skill to your resume that may be applied to nearly any industry.

We went through the section on women in her paper and overhauled the organization, focusing on making the flow cleaner and more concise. We went through my comments and discussed what should be included in her discussion on religion. For tomorrow she will finish writing her sections on religion and men and we will go through those with the same attention to detail.

Today the student and I worked on an assignment for his communications class: the personal lore presentation. He and I worked on building an outline, starting with the most simple (intro, body, conclusion) and slowly, systematically expanding the outline. After getting an idea of the story - he is writing about his State Championship in senior year of high school - we began to fill out the details and build up the outline. It took him a little while to get the method I was describing. At first he struggled to fill out the more general spots of the outline, but after some work he filled it out very nicely with general questions.

Since our last meeting, the student had written a draft of her results section and began writing her discussion. After some editing for clarity, accuracy, and writing conventions, she continued working on her discussion. We first looked at how her results supported or refuted her hypothesis and then at how they supported or refuted other studies. With some guidance, she was able to include these considerations in her essay. We then discussed the implications of her research with regards to human physiology and the general significance of her research, being sure to fill in a detailed outline that she can use when finishing her paper. In order to finish this project, she needs to add citations where she made a note to do so, make some minor changes to one of her tables, and finish her discussions section using her outline. She is very close to being done, and should be able to make her deadline this Friday.

The student brought in an essay assignment for his class covering the story "Snow." We went over the prompt and I asked him to go through the text and underline quotes that interested him and that he thought could tie back to the potential thesis we'd discussed. We talked about author intention and how to use the text to interpret meaning. He's getting better at reading with intention and connecting points and even had a few "ah-ha" moments re-reading it again. We then went over the context surrounding the prompt and the quotes he had underlined and made notes about how each could relate back to his interpretation. He wrote several thesis drafts and did a basic outline including text examples. We ended with free writing, but connected it to "Snow" by having him imagine a scene with character watching a main plot point in Snow and writing what they observed.

In our tutoring session today, we workshopped one of the student's papers. First, we covered several different grammar topics. We went over articles (definite and indefinite), plurals, possessives, subject-verb agreement, and APA citations. After going over rules and examples for each of these grammar topics, she went over her paper and looked for errors related to those topics. She did a great job taking the information I gave her about the different grammar topics and using it to correct her own paper. For next time, she and I will discuss working on overall paper structure and how to break down writing prompts.
