How can a tutor help you master the PSAT?

The PSAT or Preliminary SAT, otherwise known as the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, is an exam that helps students prepare for the SAT, and also might lead to students earning college scholarships, depending on their scores. Therefore, it is important for you to do your best on each part of the exam. If you're preparing for the PSAT, let Varsity Tutors connect you with a tutor in Nashville, TN.

The PSAT is given every year in October. There are now multiple types of PSAT exams, including the PSAT/ NMSQT, which is closest to the actual SAT exam and taken in eleventh and twelfth grade. The PSAT 10 has the same content as the PSAT/ NMSQT, but it may not be used for scholarships. This one is taken the spring of tenth grade. The PSAT 8/9 is used to get an idea of student progress and taken in the eighth or ninth grade. All of the versions of the exam allow test takers two hours and 45 minutes. No matter what version you are facing, there is a tutor here to help you study. Find an expert PSAT tutor in Nashville today by contacting Varsity Tutors' educational directors.

Session Summaries by PSAT Tutors

Nashville, TN PSAT tutoring
The student did well on the reading section of the PSAT, answering 25 out of 28 questions correctly. We did a math with calculator section during our session, which worked out well because he has more questions about the math than the verbal portions of the test and going over one problem at a time allows me to explain strategies and concepts while the problem is fresh in his mind. He catches on very quickly and is a joy to work with.

This session we reviewed grammatical concepts from last week and then moved onto some new ones. The student is pretty much set with independent clauses, dependent clauses, punctuation, noun and verb agreement and removing redundancies. The second hour of the session we continued with math practice. We went over a wide variety of algebra problems, because he needs simple review and not in-depth explanations. He needed prompting with inverse relationships and word problems, so we will review those again next time. Overall, he is improving significantly.

The student and I continued working on the official sample PSAT. She did very well on both the writing and reading sections. She was able to complete both sections in a timely manner with plenty of time to spare. We reviewed how she should utilize her extra time since I did not want her changing too many answers, a trap some student fall into when they have extra time remaining. She got 37/43 correct. We reviewed her incorrect answers and reviewed tips and strategies for tough questions. Her performance on the writing section was even stronger. She missed only one question. This would get her a score of 730 out of a possible 760 in reading/ writing. She will finish the rest of the math section on her own and we will review it at our next session on Wednesday.

We worked through a reading section of a full length practice test. He was doing really well until he got to the most difficult passage. He seemed to mentally shut down so we talked about strategy when that happens: it's ok to skip a passage and come back to it, don't give up on individual questions even if the passage is difficult, etc. We also talked about how to use the follow up questions to help answer the previous questions if he get stuck. I watched him implement this successfully a few times. Overall, he did really well and he said he was feeling better about it too. I sent him the rest of the practice test so that he could complete the English and math sections before we meet again. It would be great if you could encourage him to work through these this week.
