Session Summaries by Essay Editing Tutors

Today, we reviewed the student's first draft for her reading of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. We delved into the play's content, and focused on the ideas and organization of her paper. The student and I discussed ways to strengthen the introduction and providing more of a guide to the contents of the paper. We talked about the different meanings of some of the vocabulary used in the play, and why the reader or viewer should pay particular attention to words with varied meanings, especially mendacity and silence. We also explored some of the uncertainties of the play, as the story is fraught with outright deception and lies of omission, and were careful to not extrapolate. Some of the sentences in the student's draft summarized multiple events and positions into vague words or phrases that simplify some of the plot and tension of the play, so we paid special attention to unpacking these ideas in order to more thoroughly and convincingly support her positions. She felt her draft was dry, but its bones were solid and certainly provided foundation for more complete analysis, which she performed today.

This session we prepared for the student's class discussion about whether characters in "To Kill a Mockingbird" deserved forgiveness or not. We had an in-depth conversation about what forgiveness might mean and how understanding characters contributes to sympathy. The student worked hard and methodically, coming up with many good and well-evidenced points as to why we might or might not forgive various characters. One strategy I suggested was that of anticipating an opposing line of argument to make your own argument more effective and to show that you have thought about the issue from both sides. We continued our thinking about different modes of narration, discussing the 2nd person narrative style encountered in Italo Calvino's "If one night a traveler". We also talked about studying texts supplemental to the class reading.

We're working on a paper that's due for the student's English class. The paper is focused on the text, Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien, and his teacher has given him a series of activities to complete that are building his paper. The last time we worked on his annotated bibliography, and in this session we covered transitions, marking important quotations, and developing supporting evidence for his thesis sentence. I checked on the paper that he completed last time with me and he stated that he believed he did well, but he will check with his teacher to get a concrete report. The student stays pretty engaged throughout his sessions.

We worked on the student's "London" essay most of the session. Her teacher had given her some points to correct, so we went through those. They included things like: not using "lame" words, not ending sentences in prepositions, not using "you," and not using informal language. Her biggest challenge is creating new, more complex sentences from basic, short ones. In the end, she had a well-written essay she was proud of. The student read me a delightful original poem, and I gave her some feedback on that. Then we looked over the "negative" side of her debate research for an upcoming debate. We made a few structural adjustments to her conclusion, and I helped explain some of the words from her research that were new to her.

Today, the student and I met for the first time and had a wide-ranging discussion about his work in English class -- what he feels like he needs to improve (setting up and analyzing quotes, structuring his essays) and what he is confident in (we discussed his enthusiasm for writing in History as opposed to English, finding it difficult to keep all of the rules for writing an essay about literature in his head). We reviewed in detail his latest essay, on "The Pearl" by John Steinbeck, and agreed that the student would look for a novel to read outside of class so that he can start to make reading more of a habit. He will have an essay assignment on "Of Mice and Men" in a few weeks, so until then we will review old essays and discuss strategies for improving his writing.

The student read and completed homework for Act 3 scenes 4-5 of Romeo and Juliet this evening, after which we reviewed the act in its entirety to prepare for his next exam. I was able to review his previously graded homework this evening, and he is getting homework grades in the "A" range and doing quite well.
