The student had his draft done early, and we went over it this session. It was a bit too long, so we talked about eliminating unnecessary phrases (like, "Now, I will confess that..." etc.). Overall, it was a good first draft, though the narrative portion was long relative to the section where he drew his conclusions and made his reflections. He also didn't quite spin the idea of "failure" in the way we talked about: it came across as though, by getting lost, he was portraying a failure to reach his destination rather than a failure to trust in himself and his abilities. He said he had written it pretty late at night, so I gave him the benefit of the doubt and asked him to have his new draft to me by Monday. His dad had also sent a long email to the both of us about his observations and ways he thinks the student could spin the concept of failure--I asked the student to look over his dad's ideas because they could be very useful in expanding the (as of now) too short reflective portion of his essay. After that, we dove into an essay that is required by 5 schools, wherein he "briefly elaborates" (in a page or less) on an extracurricular. We went through each of his activities, and the easiest ones for him to talk about were his two clubs: animation and writing. They both shared the result of creative satisfaction and an enjoyment of making new worlds and characters that are not bound by the laws of nature of the real world. The obvious choice for this essay would of course be his volunteer work at the Taiwanese Cultural Center, but the level of passion wasn't the same when he talked about; I'll have him keep it in mind, though.

The student and I worked on his common application essay. We revised the introductory paragraph to function more clearly and concisely, and then we retooled the ending to avoid repetition. This freed up his word count and allowed him to add a section that explained what DiaScan does. As it stands, I think this is a very strong draft and is fine shape to submit.

Thursday was my first session with this student, and so we took this time to figure out where he wanted to go, what he wanted to study, and what he had done up to this point. We looked at the common application essay questions together and went over which ones he felt most comfortable answering, and then started brainstorming experiences that could turn themselves into essays. We went over his grades and test scores, and started to piece together him as a potential candidate for university life. He is in an excellent place to begin the college application process, but he is feeling a loss of confidence as many people do when faced with a daunting task that forces you to assess your life relative to those around you and speak about yourself in a way that is honestly not comfortable for anyone. In brainstorming for his essays we also talked about the college application process as a whole, what colleges look for in their applicant pool, and where his strengths lie. I left the student with a list of some things for him to do in the next week or two that were both doable but helpful to guarantee his success moving forward. This included solidifying his list of colleges, conversing with those around him for a sense of what he should include in his essay, reaching out to current students at the colleges he is interested in applying to, etc. I look forward to working with him as he moves forward in the college application process.

This was a really good first session with the student. He was able to get started on an essay that he had due and complete the introductory paragraph for the assignment. What I appreciated about this session was that his professor provides so many great resources. A lot of the work that we are doing is just to decode the materials. Comprehension and pulling themes to write about is probably going to be a big part of our development this semester.

We went over my comments on his revisions to the Common App essay, and did another round of revisions. He was able to let more of his voice and opinions show through. We made certain areas more concise and clear - especially when discussing transitions from one school to another. The student said he will have another reader look it over now. We began working on the shorter "Why This University?" and "What does your future hold?" paragraphs. While working on the specific university paragraph, he mentioned that he'd spoken to an admissions rep at his school last year, and we discussed ways to include this in the essay. We also developed questions he could ask the rep in an email that he will send this week, so that he can include the response in this short essay. He expressed that he'd had a difficult time thinking of how to respond to the essay about his future plans, but after asking some prompting questions, we came up with an approach for the response. For the next session, he will have drafts of the university specific short answer essays, and another short answer essay for another school with an upcoming deadline.
