Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I met with the student again this afternoon to begin working on his upcoming History essay. We were able to begin thinking about the question and thinking about how the student would frame his response to that question. We also began reviewing his source materials and thinking about how each of these could be used in his essay. By the end of our meeting, I felt that the student was more confident and more interested in this subject. It seemed like our discussion had helped kick-start his thinking on this subject, and his analysis of his sources - the important first step in the writing process. We ended early with the agreement that Tyler would review his sources today and on Sunday and begin preparing his outline. I asked him to reach out to me via email when he had done this, so we can move to the next stage of putting his thoughts on paper and framing his response."
"This week, the student and I worked on applying many of the concepts we initially discussed last week, paying particular attention to structure and planning. To that end, I had the student outline and eventually rewrite one of his earlier in-class essays, focusing on many of the areas I thought could use improvement; structure, grammar, word choice, and how he presented his argument. He himself admits that outlines aren't usually his modus operandi, so I walked him through how to sketch a quick outline during a timed paper, explaining that while it did not have to be in depth, it would help him keep his focus as he writes, something he seemed to have a bit of trouble with during timed essay exams. He was receptive to the idea, particularly the fact that I was simply talking about a quick five minute task at the beginning of the exam, since he is concerned about time when writing. When rewriting, he seemed receptive to most of the ideas and corrections I suggested as we go, and he readily recognized and even in some cases already corrected some of his mistakes in his original work."
"We annotated some texts and prepared an outline/tentative draft of a few paragraphs on a rhetorical analysis essay."
"We had a great session on Thursday. The student did a great job on his spelling words and read very well. We reviewed his last Star Wars book so I could check his understanding and memory, which he did very nicely on. We also reviewed pages from his other finished books, and he read these excellently. We got back to writing his football story, and he practiced spelling and sentence construction successfully."
"Today, the student worked on writing a newspaper article for history about the Pearl Harbor attack. We talked about what happened, why it happened, and how the US would and should have reacted. We looked for some primary source images to include in the paper. Lastly, I taught him how newspaper articles were usually organized, and he began the first draft of his article."
"Today, the student and I covered math. He has a test coming up on Monday. It's clear he wants to learn and do his very best. He's doing better with concentration, which I am happy to see. He's able to focus for longer periods of time. We worked on exponents (product rule, equations, etc.)."
