"Because the student was still attempting to answer every question for the homework I assigned her, we reviewed basic SAT strategy (using process of elimination combined with an informed choice of the remaining possible answers). I pointed out that if she had left blank the multiple-choice problems that she had gotten wrong on the last SAT exam she took, with an average scaling factor of around 20, that her scores would have been approximately 80 points higher on each section. I also assigned her 1 hour of work in each packet, not focusing on doing a lot of problems in that time, but employing the methods and strategies we discussed these past two sessions."
"We reviewed several recurring math issues involving statistics and probability, and continued with grammar issues."
"The student returned the diagnostic test I had her take, and I graded it. I returned her essays, and went over them with her. I want her to be eventually scoring a 10 on her essays. I gave her 18 math section problems to do, then went over them. We worked on a long reading passage and then reviewed it. I had her try skimming the questions before reading the passage to see if she is able to better fine tune the details. She did fairly well. I have sent her another diagnostic to work on and complete by our next session."
"In today's session, we covered two areas: 1. Op-amp circuit analysis and calculation and 2. Capacitance and inductance simplifications. For op-amp circuit, we discussed inverting amplifier, non-inverting amplifier, summing amplifier, multistage amplifier, voltage follower, how to use V+=V- and I+=I_=0 in derivation. For capacitance and inductance, I included some strategies to identify the connections in series and parallel. For each area, we worked out 5 problems respectively."
"Today, we went over a practice midterm to help the student study for her test tomorrow. Topics covered include amino acid structures, protein structures, intermolecular forces, reaction kinetics and thermodynamics, Mendelian inheritance patterns, recombination frequency, and epistasis."
"Today, the student and I did another practice math section for the SAT. We had some difficulty with a few geometry problems, but we worked through them together. We also spent a few minutes reviewing general principles that apply to area problems. He had a positive demeanor throughout the session. I included strategies to help with recurring difficulties concerning area. I left him with instructions to finish the section we were working on so that we can review it next time."
