Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I worked on organizing an essay for his history class. The essay was about whether FDR's expansion of the US government was warranted, given the conditions Americans faced during the Great Depression. He had to use evidence from a packet of documents his teacher had given him to support his thesis."
"I went over some math practice with the student for his placement exam on Saturday. His main challenge is that he does not show his work. While he was quite focused at the lesson, he is still rather headstrong and is set on doing the math in his head without writing out his work. I tried to explain that this approach still tends to give him the wrong answer half the time, either out of a lapse of judgement or because he fails to read the problem carefully enough. He needed some help with his history class in which he is still studying the U.S. Constitution, so we reviewed some important terms and figures (Anti-Federalists, George Mason, the Bill of Rights, etc.). He also needed to concentrate on finishing homework for some school days he had missed; I had him work on his social studies, for which he needed to write a short biographical sketch of the early American politician Thomas Hutchinson. He is also working on his application to his desired school, which we will continue with on Wednesday."
"Today the student and I covered early Supreme Court cases and World War II. He had a positive attitude towards the material reviewed. I encouraged the student to keep reviewing before the test he has next week. He said he did not have any other questions on the material."
"The student worked on finishing his rough draft for his peer-review tomorrow. We completed his introduction, conclusion, and a brief synopsis of the novel in class, and then turned to formatting and proof-reading his essay. In all, his essay is in good shape for a first draft, especially the structure of his body paragraphs."
"The student finished a pre-test, and did a very good job. He struggles with measuring and with input output machines, so we practiced those, and I realized he understands the concepts but sometimes does not read directions as carefully as he should. We will continue to work on this. We also practiced rounding to the nearest tens and hundreds place, where he did well. We are going to do more practice when it comes to following directions, and start on multiple-step equations for next week."
"This was our final session before the student took his final for the class. We reviewed his practice tests. He had done the practice final test before I got there and did not get good results. With both the right and wrong answers, we captured correct statements on paper so he could do some last-minute study for the test. These tests were extensive and we did this until we ran out of time. He reported later that he got an excellent score on his final!"
