Session Summaries by Social Studies Tutors

Naperville, IL Social Studies tutoring
We were almost finished with the last PowerPoint last session, so I completed that and reviewed the content of both PowerPoints with the student again. Once I felt we had the material covered, I went over key issue four. This was new material that I will review with her during her next session. I also laid out the direction she should focus for her studies. The hearths of agriculture, the 11 types of agriculture, subsistence vs commercial farming, shifting cultivation, and undernourishment are where she should focus her energies.

We continued to cover practice exam questions topic-by-topic to see where the student had the most difficulty and which topics he felt more comfortable with. Cultural processes and industrialization were better than geographical terms, so that is the area so far where he needs to do further review.

Today the student and I went through free response questions from prior AP Tests. He did well overall and explained his ideas clearly. There was only one section which he needed assistance on, and this was the portion dealing with two different geographical models (The Core-Periphery Model and Rostow's Model). We have scheduled to meet next Sunday at the same time to go over this, and more free response questions as well as some multiple choice questions. I asked him to finish the last FRQ.

This was our second session preparing for the student's exam. We discussed strategies for FRQs and the practice exam that she took over the weekend. I provided her with a study guide and vocab/ concept list for the first topic area of the exam -- Nature and Perspectives. With this list, we went further into concepts such as diffusion and environmental determinism and thought of examples. This focus on key vocab and concepts with examples seems to be working well for her and we will plan to continue with this method and later get more into depth on the FRQs. I will provide her with vocab/ concept lists for the next two topic areas which we will review during our next session. She definitely seems to be making progress on achieving the goal of scoring a 4/5 on the exam.

Today, we continued to prepare for the AP Human Geography test that is next week Friday. Since the student did not have time to take the practice test included in his study guide, we went through questions together. We covered several test-taking strategies, including the process of elimination and deconstructing vocabulary. He did well, but will benefit from additional practice and studying.

The student and I worked on the review for her upcoming AP test. We focused on the industrialization and the urbanization units, comparing and contrasting all of the different models and reviewing over the key terms. I also found a PPT online that has all of the different graphics for the models together in one presentation, and went over each graph. I will send the student an email with the link to this PPT, as she said it was a really effective study tool. We also went on the AP Human Geography website and looked over some examples of free response questions from real students from the previous year's test. The student is working hard to prepare for her exam, and she will be ready as long as she continues to fill out the review and practice her free response questions. She seems to be recalling more and more information each time we meet for a tutoring session, so her memory retention of the class material is increasing.
