Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I had our final session, and worked on some organic chemistry lab techniques, as well as some review of acids and bases. She has started doing much better, and has gotten as much as she can, it seems like, from tutoring in the physical sciences. She got a 12 on her last practice test, which is excellent!"
"[COVERED]: To shake the vacation off, we began with a review of fundamental concepts in Equilibrium chemistry and Thermodynamics. We moved on to a problem applying Hess' Law (where we closed the last time) and moved on to Solution Equilibria and Phase Equilibria. [PROGRESS/CHALLENGES]: "Vacation brain" had set in, but the rust flaked off nicely with a little mental calisthenics. The student has learned to trust me when I seem obsessive about fine points of problem-solving methodology and rapidly absorbed a consistent way to solve molar solubility problems. [EXTRA PRACTICE]: He will revise the material covered today and preread for our next session - Acid/Base chemistry. [CONCERNS]: None."
" The student and I met and discussed what she was looking to get out of the tutoring sessions. She wanted to focus primarily on chemistry and physics. We started reviewing chemistry, focusing on atomic theory, periodic properties, chemical bonding, and intermolecular forces. As we went through the material, she did practice problems to assess her understanding of the material. I asked that she review the material that we covered, look through the physics material covering mechanics to assess her level of understanding, and to start studying thermodynamics if she had time."
"The student and I met to review the topic of periodic motion/waves, another concept that she hasn't seen since high school since she passed out of Physics I. Again, I was pleased with the amount of pre-reading she'd done; she seemed relatively familiar with the concepts and brought a number of her own questions to the table. We spent the first portion of the session reinforcing and clarifying some of the concepts she'd read about, and then transitioned into two more difficult passages."
"Today we covered physical sciences. Equilibrium covered most of the session: Ka, Kb, pKa, Ksp, etc. I was able to field a few questions at the beginning from the PS section of her full length exam. She said her verbal score improved a bit. We also did some practice questions addressing her questions. She is going to take a VR test, finish her diagnostic exam, and check over the rest of her full length exam."
"The session focused on the three phases of the exam. Because the student shows excellent reasoning ability and considerable test-taking skills, the session emphasized nuances to enhance speed. For example, using a "web" was recommended for loose sequencing."
