Session Summaries by English Grammar and Syntax Tutors

Naperville, IL English Grammar and Syntax tutoring
We had a wonderful session. The student did great work on the Ancient Greek Olympics essay, reformatting grammatical errors and finding new research online. It looks great, and I really think it's going to be an exemplary essay. We also went over a few important tips for the exam, and his homework is to work on identifying the main idea and supporting details. He seems to get the idea, so I have faith that he'll do fine. I'm looking forward to the next session!

This was an online session in which I received some work from the student, reviewed it, and sent back detailed feedback. In this case, he was writing a poem and wanted some suggestions on how to revise it. I provided many comments in a word document and finished with an email detailing some final advice.

We worked on a few math problems that concentrated on statistical analysis. We had a problem in which we had to analyze different graphs, but the majority of our time was spent reviewing an English project she had to complete.

We mainly worked on reading and writing, with some spelling practice. The student read a passage out loud and then we answered questions to give her practice for writing. From her previous written passage which was her "homework", she has really improved her spelling. I also suggested the student do 2 writing practices per week. For the last 15 minutes, she played a spelling game and practiced her weekly 20 words I brought with me.

I spent 45 minutes editing the student's first draft of a research paper on immigration. Right after that, I edited the final draft of an assignment for 15 minutes. The next day, the student sent me an edited version of her immigration paper, and I spent a half hour editing that, helping to form the intro to build a cohesive argument. I met, in person, with the student. We began the day working on a Spanish assignment where the student had to transform an earlier assignment into a visual presentation with an accompanying audio track of her reading the text aloud. We went through and edited mistakes on the written portion of the assignment, and then I worked with her on pronunciation for the recording. She had a short writing assignment for social studies, in which she had to write a diary entry from the perspective of a historical figure. I helped her brainstorm. The student has to re-tell a story of her Mom's in front of her class, so I worked with her on reading aloud and being aware of her body when she does. She is a very engaging storyteller, but tends to sway when she is thinking. I told her to practice the story a lot so that she has the brain space to think about her physicality in addition to what she has to say next. The student and I talked about a play she is reading in class. She has a reading test on Tuesday, and wanted to go over a couple sections she did not understand, in which a ghostly ancestor appears to the main character of the play. We talked through exactly what was happening in that scene, and the symbolic significance of the ancestor. She did a great job this week and really earned her long weekend. She takes school very seriously, and I think the student sometimes feels overwhelmed by the brainstorming process for writing assignments, as she did today with her short social studies diary entry. Once she is able to sit down and write she becomes a lot more relaxed. We need to work on how to brainstorm on paper and draw up an outline so the student already knows her plan of action by the time she sits down in front of the computer. Also, she still needs to work on building a cohesive argument in a paper (as is to be expected from a sixth-grader), and I look forward to working with her on other writing assignments. Spanish is also improving.

Worked on analyzing the poems "Guy in the Mirror" and "Man in the Mirror," discussing tone, concept, and theme to come up with a thesis for the student's paper. Left him with the assignment of creating a thesis with 2 links emailed as a reference.
