On Monday, the student and I worked on French and language arts. In French we completed a worksheet using prepositions. We also practiced using the verb etre. In language arts, we worked on brainstorming, outlining, and then writing a piece that her teacher assigned. I want her to keep working on conjugating verbs in French and reading her writing out loud when she edits. She did an excellent job working hard and thinking critically with her French worksheet. She also was very creative with her writing piece, which was fun to see.

We went over the two essays she rewrote and the new essay. The student's structure is much better so we focused on grammar and tying all the ideas together. She also showed me two essays for school. We then went over reading comprehension and her vocab words. The student will hopefully get a more challenging reading comprehension book for next time.

This session, the student and I discussed free verse poetry. We focused on contemporary, humorous writers like Ogden Nash and William Carlos Williams. In the latter's poem, we discussed the use of title as part of the poem, the effect of breaking up lines and compared it to the classical poetry from Romeo and Juliet we read last week. He absorbed the terms and ideas from classical poetry really well and creatively applied them to contemporary poetry. For this coming week, he will write a one paragraph analysis of a free verse poem I left with him. He also thought of a fascinating project: he will write a poem of his own with words which combine to form the shape of a person. For next time, we will further discuss text as hieroglyph, semiotics. We will also discuss European class structure in the Middle Ages, something which he has said he is interested in learning more about. We will then begin a historical essay using these topics. Excellent work this week!

Student 1 and I covered SAT math prep and writing prep. We went through his practice test that he took, and his score was high - about a 600 in each section! I think this is good news, and hopefully, it will give him the confidence to push through for Saturday. We broke down sections of difficulty. For math, it seems as if these sections are the main issue-- inequalities and equations, percents, coordinate geometry, and functions. We worked on those. With Student 2, we edited her Elon essay.
