How can a tutor help you master the ACT?

College entrance exams are some of the most anxiety-provoking parts of students' academic careers. The American College Testing (ACT) exam is no different. The three-and-a-half hour test covers English, writing, reading, math, and science. While the writing section is optional, the skill is one of the most important for succeeding in school and in college. You may have done well in school. It is still essential to brush up on all your subjects, as the ACT can challenge your knowledge in ways it never has been. Varsity Tutors can find you an expert ACT tutor in Naperville, IL, who can work at a time that is most convenient for you. Test prep can be time-consuming, but your tutor can try to help you study more efficiently, and effectively, at the same time.

Meet during school hours, or in the evening. Your tutor can also agree to meet on the weekend, at a local library or your own home. Flexibility and willingness to travel differentiates tutoring from classroom test prep. So does the ability to address your weakest topics, at your own pace, and to use alternative teaching methods to match your learning style. If your schedule is super hectic, your tutor will even meet face-to-face via the web, using a live learning platform that makes it a smooth and efficient process.

Session Summaries by ACT Tutors

Naperville, IL ACT tutoring
As this was our first session, the student and I discussed some basic info about the college entrance exam and some strategies that can be used for the whole test. We then focused specifically on the English section. We did a quick review of punctuation and other usage/mechanics knowledge. She has a good understanding of grammar and does not struggle with U/M questions. We also discussed some strategies to apply when responding to rhetorical skills questions, such as looking for transitions words and paying attention to what the question is asking. We went through the practice problems in the English intro section, with her explaining her reasoning as she completed the passages, then we completed three passages in practice test four, paying attention to timing and leaving some time to take a second look at answers while using the strategies we had just discussed. For our next session, she will complete two English passages on her own and write an essay responding to the prompt.

The student and I reviewed the three English passages that she completed for homework. We focused on the proper use of commas and "and". Then, she finished a reading passage, and we reviewed any incorrect responses or confusing questions together. With the remaining time, we looked over the material for her algebra 2 test. We paid particular attention to completing the square and converting between the different types of equations.

Today, we focused on math. It is his strongest subject, and I'm hoping that a bit of review will give big gains to his math score. There were a few topics we needed to review, but for the most part, the student has a very strong grasp on algebra, geometry, and trig, including the important formulas. Most of what we worked on were strategies for moving quickly through the test and for tackling especially hard, multi-step problems. We discussed how taking notes, doing scratch-work, and in general marking up his test will help his accuracy - showing work on math will keep him from missing any steps. Also, taking notes on the reading will help him move more quickly through the questions. We also worked on his English skills today. He has a strong grasp of grammar, and needs confidence more than an overall review.

The student and I worked through the content that will be included on the English section of the ACT, and then worked together through two sets of English practice questions on the website. We talked through the techniques and strategies we went over in our last session in relation to the questions.

She is a terrific student who scored very well on the English test I administered. We hope to reinforce mathematic concepts she may have forgotten and practice speed reading next class. I think her strongest areas will be algebra and English, and weakest will be reading and science (which we will practice next time).

In my session with this student, we focused on the math section of the exam, as this is her most challenging area. We went through the problems from the practice test that she answered incorrectly or wasn't able to answer. Concepts/ problems we went over included word problems (algebra, geometry, and trig), number lines, matrices, and multiplying exponents. Word problems pose the most difficulty for her. I helped her with strategies to interpret what the questions are asking. We also graded the other sections of the practice test she completed for homework. She scored a 26 in English, a 27 in science and a 27 in reading. While she was able to finish the English and science tests, she said that she didn't have time to finish the last passage of the reading test, so this would explain her score (she has been consistently scoring 30+ in the reading).
