Session Summaries by French Tutors

Mundelein, IL French tutoring
We practiced replacing words with pronouns, and we used several different word order scenarios (commands, questions, sentences both negative and affirmative, compound past and present tense examples). We had not practiced the spelling of numbers previously. Today, we practiced spelling numbers. She needs to remember that est means is. Both est and is have an "s." The word et means and. There is no "s" in et or in and. Vingt-et-un means 21. The French say: twenty and one. We reviewed all the cardinal and ordinal number spellings. We also reviewed the written usage of numbers when telling time. For example, the student needs to remember that 3:30 is trois heures et demie. Heures has an "s" because there is more than one hour. Demie has an "e." I remember to add an "e" when demie falls at the end except with trois jours et demi. Heure is feminine and so is demie. Jour is masculine and so is demi, but there is no "s" on demi. There is une demi-pomme. Even though pomme is feminine, it's still demi because it comes in front. The difference between demi and demie can be confusing. It is midi et demi. We reviewed the differences between demi and demie using the student's textbook. It is largely a question of memory when spelling demi and demie. She studied a lot since we last met, and she really impressed me by all that she now knows. But, she still relies on her French ear at times (est and et sound the same). But, she really thinks it all through much more now and is able to explain it much better too. Most of her answers were correct when we practiced.

The student and I reviewed various preposition-related topics (specifically, verbs that take prepositions as part of phrases) to prepare for a test that same day. We also went over relative pronouns (qui, que, ce qui, ce que, dont, ce dont) and hashed out some cultural information. I reviewed/ made suggestions to guide script for a presentation that she will make in class with a partner.
