Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We discussed the student's assignment for this week. I edited the grammar and use of argumentation in his work. We went through the edits line by line, and discussed the reasoning behind them. I suggested that he write a new concluding sentence, and said I would look it over after the session when he'd finished it."
"We continued discussing the draft of the student's argumentative essay. He came prepared with the next 2 paragraphs of his draft, so we discussed revisions to them. We discussed additional grammar concepts, such as transition words and proper capitalization. I also told him that when he edits his work, he should read it aloud so he can clearly see when it doesn't sound correct. For our next session, he will bring his conclusion paragraph and also come up with a title for the essay."
"We are working on creating a thesis statement. We focused in on how to write/frame a thesis statement in the medical field. The student has a lot of information in her head; she also has a lot of ideas. For next week, the student is required to write a full outline for a thesis statement which she develops."
"We worked on context clues worksheets, determining the meanings of unfamiliar words based on context clues and then double-checking definitions by using a dictionary. The student also enjoyed practicing highlighting skills by highlighting context clues."
"We worked on creating dialogue using cartoons and pronouns. The student also worked on a Common Core 4th grade ELA assessment. I asked comprehension and vocabulary definition and usage (for new/difficult words) questions. The student answered questions related to the passage. I assisted by asking questions and having the student refer to the text for details. The student performed very well."
"We worked on digraphs and went over sight words again. The student is getting better at recognizing rhyming words. We read level A and B books. He needs to continue working on his reading skills and sounding out words. He is still relying on picture clues to help him know the word. We will keep working on this."
