Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we covered the rest of Chapter 3 on Stoichiometry. We went through 4 of the example problems (regarding mass/mole conversions, equation balancing, limiting reagents, and percent yield) together, and then I observed him solve the subsequent practice problems. He was able to answer all of them correctly, at a moderate pace. I can vouch that he understands the concepts in this chapter well enough. I should also note that he is very good about showing his work and considering units, which can be hard. I assigned about 3 hours of homework this time to review on Monday. Our sessions next week will be Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and we will try to cover the next chapter on aqueous solutions."
"Solutions: definitions and applications of solute, solvent, mixtures, saturated, unsaturated, and supersaturated solutions. Electrolyte/Non-electrolyte solutions. Percent by mass and molarity. Application of molarity and dilutions to problems."
"Student and I reviewed empirical and molecular formulas in addition to going over the calculation of solutions. I emphasized the importance of canceling out units to keep track of the equation. His comprehension of the material increased the more problems we worked on together also. He has a lot of practice problems to work through, if he does all of them I think he will do well on the exam."
"The student has worked through the homework assignment for chapters 4 and 5 on atomic structure and the periodic table. We discussed any concepts that he found challenging and devoted the rest of the session to practicing element names/symbols, writing electron configurations, and balancing chemical equations. He will work through the material in chapter 6 for next time. He had a highly positive attitude towards the material and had a strong understanding of each concept after we discussed it and worked through a few practice problems. He is able to identify elements and write electron configurations independently, so he should be well prepared for his first test."
"The student reviewed classifying reactions, balancing equations, and determining the limiting reagent today. She was also introduced to an alternate method for solving limiting reagent problems call the ICE Box method. Then we delved into Kinetic Molecular Theory and used the KMT and a simulation to derive the Gas Laws. For homework, the student will finish practicing applying the KMT and Gas Laws to some concept questions. She has a great conceptual grasp of KMT/Gas Laws."
"The student reviewed more concepts from the periodic table of elements, such as calculating the number of neutrons, identifying the atomic number, and recognizing the trends such as the atomic radius, electronegativity, ionization energy, and electron affinity across the periodic table. We also talked about isotopes and ions. In the first half of the session, we practiced more scientific notation and significant figures."
