Session Summaries by Writing Tutors

The student showed a marked improvement in the essay she wrote for homework. While it did contain a few grammar / spelling mistakes, which she caught with further proofreading, she clearly took my advice from last week to heart and was able to write a much more compelling personal narrative. She included specific details that added to the suspense and flow of the story, rather than just adding extraneous details to lengthen the essay, as she had in times past. She also utilized much stronger vocabulary words in her essay. There were a few paragraphs that still needed fleshing out, which I assigned her to revise for homework, however, I think the student now grasps the fundamentals of personal essay writing. I also had her brainstorm a list of key personal milestones that would make great essay writing material and could be adapted for a variety of prompts.

During today's session, we worked on two different things. First, we completed the student's proposal for her feasibility report. This involved editing the sections she had written, and adding some depth to the introduction. Next we worked on her abnormal psych course. We looked at mood disorders, including uni polar depression and bipolar depression, as well as dissociative disorders. I helped clarify the concepts and terminology were appropriate. Overall, it was a highly productive session.

The student is writing a speech about a personal experience for his speech contest. He is writing about his grandfather. The speech needs to be 5/6 paragraphs long including an introduction and a conclusion. He wrote down his thoughts and then I helped him put them together into complete sentences. He has to complete the rest of the speech by Thursday so I am either going to meet with him tomorrow to help him or I will help him online. Next week he has to memorize the speech so I am going to have him work on that too.

The student is working in a group on a paper about literacy influences. He sent me a copy of the paper about an hour before we met via video chat and I read it over and made a few brief notes then we met via video chat and I walked through the paper paragraph by paragraph working on some verb details (mostly number and tense and making sure that they agree throughout the sentence) and on a few little grammar details (possessive apostrophes, where to put punctuation with quote marks) and some bigger picture structure items (length of paragraphs and positive/active voice). Great work, a good quick paced session. The student is smart.

The student and I spent the entire session working on creating annotated source note cards for his upcoming paper. In order to do so, we worked on how to create themes for the note cards, how to organize them, how to cite things using the ellipse, what information to record, and how to paraphrase the sources. I left him with the rest of the note cards to make (we finished about 25-30% of the total number due). He received 94 and 93 on the science and history tests that we had previously studied for.

Mount Vernon, NY Writing tutoring
For this session we focused on writing -- specifically, on a couple writing assignments the student wanted some help with for her English class. We discussed grammar and essay-writing techniques as we went through her work piece by piece. I also want to get her thinking more about syntax, word choice and overall structure rather than merely writing down what comes to mind, directly as it comes to her mind. We were able to get cohesive threads of new thought to add to her work that would further supplement and support her main claims. All in all, this was a very productive session.
