Mount Vernon, NY History tutoring
We spent most of our time working on the student's unit 5 CCOT essay on labor systems in Sub-Saharan Africa between 1750 and 1914. We discussed key issues related to the topic, and I helped him formulate some ideas so he could complete the essay. After he had completed the essay, I suggested some editing to improve it and get it ready to turn in. We also spent time reviewing for the exam and developed a plan for doing our final test prep this week and weekend.

Today we covered the second, third, and fourth chapters assigned for the student's summer assignment. This included analyzing the development of increasingly sophisticated governments, class structures, and religions in Egypt, Mesopotamia, India, and sub-Saharan Africa, as well as climate change (desertification leading to Bantu migrations, soil depletion in the Indus Valley). We went over making connections from the text to previous material (hunter-gatherer clan structure to councils of elders in early Sumer to codified constitutions like Hammurabi's), as well as to the future (Egyptian scribes forming a class like 21st century American white-collar workers).

In today's lesson I helped the student in both his language arts and world history homework. I first looked over a language arts assignment that I had helped the student with last week and which have now been graded; we discussed why he received the grade he did. I then helped the student with a brief l.a. exercise where he had to take a paragraph full of run-on sentences and fragments and make it grammatically correct. I then helped him with his world history homework, where he had answer questions pertaining to the development of civilization and cite passages from the textbook.

Today we covered the Byzantine Empire and European Middle Ages. We also discussed some studying and review strategies. This was our first session and the student has a quiz on this material Wednesday. She did not struggle with the material but has difficulty with the nature of the multiple choice questions. I will be sending her links to some online flashcard reviews. There were no concerns during this session. Next week we will be covering material in anticipation of her unit test.

For tonight's session, I prepared a brief assignment that I believed would help the student with his critical reading skills. I made copies of a 12 page history book and had the student read it and highlight important sentences. The article he read was entitled "What if Pizarro had not Found Potatoes in Peru?" The student read the article in an appropriate time-frame and even said he enjoyed the topic. His responses to my questions (some I asked on the spot and some I had typed up in anticipation of the assignment) were well-reasoned. He also had thoughtful questions on the material.

The student has been assigned to recite the Gettysburg Address. He has been learning it and has done a good job. We spent the first part of the session discussing its deeper meaning and learning the latter parts of the Address. We spent the second part of the session reading and discussing a passage from his History text on the early stages of Europe's Middle Ages.
