Mount Prospect, IL Physical Chemistry tutoring
We mainly focused on her struggle with forces, which was the last topic she took a test on. Therefore, we went over problems and discussed the general approach to force problems. In addition, we talked about the general tendencies along with general patterns she should be aware of. Then we briefly touched upon Calculus at the end of the session.

The student and I went over the 2nd half of her chemistry homework on Lewis dot structures. She did not have a methodical approach for distributing the electrons, which is something we worked on. I also helped her to determine when to use double and triple bonds. After her homework was complete, I gave her a few extra molecules to practice drawing their dot structures. We also reviewed vocabulary in the book and I gave her a brief intro into polarity- a topic about to be covered in her class.

During our session tonight, the student and I worked on using the Laplace transform to find the voltage transfer function for a given circuit (output voltage divided by the input voltage). He did very well with the theoretical part of this problem, but he struggled a little bit with the complicated algebra involved in solving these problems. We will keep working on this next session.

During this session, the student and I reviewed the different types of chemical bonds. These included intramolecular and intermolecular bonds, in between and within molecules. We went over a review sheet that her teacher provided, and then solved some sample exercises on the topics that we reviewed. She was able to solve the questions with almost no help, and displayed a good understanding of the material. I assigned her a chapter to read in her chemistry textbook, in addition to sample problems to solve.

During this session, the student and I went through meiosis and reviewed mitosis. She did not pick up meiosis as readily as she did mitosis. I think this was the result of being confused as to the purpose of meiosis for cells and its increased complexity vs. mitosis. We worked through and drew out the different steps for meiosis together. I tried to show her the similarities and differences between each phase of meiosis and between meiosis and mitosis. Together, we drew out meiosis and mitosis from the same starting cell. This seemed to help her understand the relationship between the two better. I encouraged her to continue reviewing the drawings we made and explaining them to herself or others. We will continue to work on this next session.
