Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we covered grammar and narrative writing. I went over conjunctions and adverbs and had the students do an activity searching for parts of speech. They then created inventive sentences using the words they found. We started a unit on narrative writing. I introduced it with telling a true story from my childhood. I then went over how I organized my thinking. I walked them through the brainstorming phase using a graphic organizer. They started their first drafts. I wanted to introduce them to writing projects that happen over a few sessions, since we have primarily focused on short-term projects that we finish in one session. I had the one student tell his story out loud so he could see that it wasn't as long as he thought. We will continue to work on our narratives in the next session."
"This session focused on helping the two students develop their grammar skills. The session was divided into 1 hour sessions. Each student received one hour of tutoring support. Student 1 - helped the student develop her understanding of parts of speech. Reviewed Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives, ctc. The primary focus was in helping the student develop her understanding of prepositions and how they are used in a sentence. The student was given support completing and double checking her assigned school work. Student 2 - This portion of the session was spent giving the student support in spelling and sentence development. The student was preparing for a quiz and needed to review parts of speech and spelling. The list he was working from had 20 words of focus and was presented on a note sheet as a study guide. The student was given the words from the list and the student copied them down. We then reviewed passed assignments and noted areas where improvement is needed."
"We did some work on the student's writing. I put him through his paces correcting and then extending his homework from last week, but putting more constraints on his repetitive sentence construction. We then began reading The BFG, aloud. He has some trouble skipping articles and pluralizations + other suffixes. We will work on that in future sessions."
"We used the student's word ladder books to practice vocabulary and definitions focusing on real world connections. We used scrabble junior to help with building five letter words by attaching letters to words previously formed by the player before you. We then used bananagrams to build words consisting of four or more letters. Examples were given by shifting each person's tiles to the right after spelling, comparing, and discussing all words created."
"We used this session as an introductory session. I did some reading comprehension with the student because I wanted to observe how he performs when he is working and gauge how he focuses during work. We discussed using vocabulary in context. The mother had mentioned that she wanted to focus on all academic subjects. I left him with a homework assignment to complete for our session on Friday."
"We used today's session to read three chapters from Storm Warning of the 39 Clues Series. The student had some trouble with some higher-level vocabulary in the book, so we stopped and discussed the meaning of each word, sometimes even looking up pictures on the Internet to help to further explain the meaning of each word. He was able to answer all comprehension questions I asked, and made some very good predictions as we read on in the story. I am very happy with his progress so far this year."
