Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This was our first session, so I began by letting the student explain his experience with studying for the SAT so far and his goals in the process. He is starting his senior year this year and is interested in pursuing engineering in college. He took a practice course at the end of last year that incorporated lectures, taking 3 practice exams and doing homework problems at home. He admits he has not studied over the summer since this exam. I started by looking at his practice exams he had taken with the course. It looks like he is scoring between 200-400 in each section, with mathematics being his strongest section. We went through several problems from each section of his first practice test together and identified some weaknesses and strengths in his approach to the problems. We discussed our plan for getting his score up, which will incorporate him reviewing all of his practice tests and bringing questions he continues to struggle with to me, taking a practice test every Saturday to simulate the real exam, and enrolling in both the SAT question of the day and word of the day. We will meet again next week to see how the review of his first three practice exams has gone and continue to refine this schedule before his October 9th exam."
"The student got a score of 1400 on the practice exam he took. The math section was the easiest for him. For the reading and writing sections, he ran out of time before he could look at all the questions. To speed up his time on the writing sections, I told him to pick the easiest of the 3 parts of it to start with, which should help him get as many correct points as possible. It will be harder to speed up his time on the reading comprehension questions. Hopefully the more he reads passages the easier and faster they will become. During this session, he and I focused on answering some more reading comprehension questions. I believe that the more he reads the better he will get at answering these types of questions. I hope that if he learns how to focus on reading possibly in his upcoming English it should help the SAT reading questions also. His homework is to write an essay, read the section about reading comprehension in the book, and to answer the questions for one long reading passage."
"We went over the student's previous SAT and discussed some areas that we will focus on in the upcoming sessions."
