Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I began by reviewing the homework I assigned her last session. She was very diligent in completing her work, selecting two articles to read and looking up unfamiliar words. She also completed multiple ACT and SAT reading sections. We talked about spending more time referring back to the passage to understand the context of each questions. She and I spent the bulk of today's session on the ACT science section. Based on her diagnostic test, timing was the biggest issue for the student on the science section. She also struggles with understanding exactly what each question is asking. We focused on both of these skills today. For the next session I've asked the student to read two more articles and complete one ACT science section. Next session we'll work more on critical reading and science, focusing on the SAT critical reading section. She continues to be a hard worker and a pleasure to teach; I look forward to seeing her on Wednesday!"
"Started by examining the student's performance on her most recent timed Math section. Scaled score was a 33, the same as her last test. Given that she had about 10 minutes extra time and was able to correct all of her mistakes upon review (all of them had to do with missed instructions or trouble with questions, rather than confusion about the math involved), we both felt that 33 was a reasonable "floor" for the section, as long as she enters the test prepared and alert."
"The student and I began our session by looking at a few more sample essays from a past ACT test. Then, we worked on passages from the ACT's English section. The student and I practiced "bracketing" adjectival phrases and parts of sentences set off by commas to make sentences simpler to understand. The student did a good job explaining his answers to most questions about transition words by referencing the surrounding context."
