Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"For this session we went over two practice exams which contained a variety of topics ranging reactions; we went over these reactions and their corresponding mechanisms. I was unable to see any scores or grades, but we did take turns doing specific problems so she can show me that she understands the material. The topic which she had the most trouble trying to comprehend was rotating a molecule so that it becomes anti-periplanar for E2 elimination, although she did not struggle much with this. After a moment of explanation and an example she was able to understand it. She had her own practice to do for her exam tomorrow."
"With my first session with the student, we went over the most recent material she covered in class, Sn1, Sn2, E1, and E2 as well as alcohol reactions, and did some sample test questions based on chapters. I could see right off the bat why she is not doing too well in the course. She is not doing assigned problems well before the exam. It's usually right before the exam. With organic chemistry, practice is key. We are set to meet one week from now, and perhaps one more before the final."
"The student and I covered the remaining of the Pharmacotherapy Part 1 lecture. I provided her with a word document of the learning objectives and we looked over the ones she had left together. She's got an exam on December 8th so our next session will be a mini-review!"
"The student has her exam tomorrow, so we began with her asking questions about content she was feeling lukewarm about. We talked through prions and hemoglobin. We then worked on practice questions from her textbook related to enzymes. She was struggling a bit with the wording of the questions, so we worked a lot on decoding the questions. I recommended that she complete as many textbook problems as she could, as she mentioned that the professor likes to take questions from the textbook. The more familiar she gets with addressing questions of that type of wording, the better prepared she will be for tomorrow. She is doing a lot better on content, so it is a matter of applying that knowledge to the questions she will be asked."
"The student has her first test tomorrow. We spent the entire session going over the practice problems from a previous test. We went through concepts from Chapter 1 to Chapter 5.2. She initially had trouble with what equations to choose for each problem; however when given the first step was able to solve the problem with no issues. We went over how to solve some of the problems and techniques to use for each problem. I mainly had her lead the problem solving and helped in areas where she got stuck. She received a 100% on her last quiz. I definitely think that with a few more practice problem she will be golden for her test tomorrow."
"The student informed me today that he got an A on his last physics quiz! Since our first tutoring session he has continued to show great improvement. Today we worked through several problems covering Newton's second law: F = ma. He did an excellent job of picking up on the mathematical interpretations of the concepts and was able to apply the equation on most problems fairly independently. He also did an excellent job in recognizing the "cause and effect" of manipulating parameters in equations (e.g., what happens to acceleration if force is doubled?). He was able to finish his homework by the end of the session, so we then looked at a challenge problem his teacher had given him involving a train. An excellent session overall."
