Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I worked on the SAT essay and his History of the World in 6 Glasses book review. He missed a portion of the purpose of the book (the cultural aspects, history, etc.), so I've suggested that he look at the book more deeply and reevaluate his review in light of our conversation. We also made a list of writing topics for the SAT (how to ask intelligent questions about the passage, what to note in his essay, the difference between plot summary and rhetorical analysis, etc.). I think he understands the goal of the essay a little more now. Great job!!"
"The student and I worked through his packets today. I gave him specific instructions on what to have done for next Sunday. We also talked about the relationship between inherent ability, effort, and ultimate skill, and how the only thing holding you back in any level of skill is just how hard you work at it."
"The student and I worked today on plugging information into her portfolio website. It went well! She picked up the behind the scenes of constructing pages very quickly and was able to upload all of her directing materials and begin on her supporting materials while I edited documents for usability and navigation. I'm looking forward to getting the rest of it uploaded next week. We are also going to start uploading documents to her Common App."
"The student and I worked together to get his notebooks and binders organized and ready for the new school year. We went through each teacher's syllabus and noted which classes he needed additional supplies for. He showed me the different homework assignments he has already been assigned and we worked on looking over some of those in the time remaining at the end of the session. I'm excited about this upcoming school year and I think the student is off to a great start."
"The student completed a reading comprehension assignment and we studied for his math test. He did very well on the math practice questions we went over in his book. He maintained a positive attitude throughout the session, and I am very pleased with his progress."
"The student completed his first tutoring session aimed at improving his organizational skills and preparing him for college. I initiated the session by gathering further details regarding his tutoring needs and expectations. Next, I began discussing college etiquette and effective faculty communications. He and I covered a range of topics, including appropriate classroom behavior, meetings with faculty members, email correspondence, and successfully navigating a syllabus. As homework, he was asked to apply his knowledge by locating key information on a syllabus he was provided with. Additionally, he was asked to compose a mock email to a professor. During the next session, I plan to cover organizational skills."
